Yea, I know there are a million other options, but both these are both very much where I want to be and both have a good price --$151 for my week in Feb. if I do it. I know the Paramount gets lots of critiques about tiny rooms, but this is for a superior Queen renovated room which certainly should be fine for just me -- and several reviews mention that size room is OK. The Hilton Garden Inn is a King room supposedly with one of their "super beds" and I know the room itself is a little larger. I'm thinking the Paramount is less "family oriented" and the rooms are little more chic, which may or may not be good. Anyone with further comments on them?

Patrick, I stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn a year ago - the rooms were very large by the NYC standards and I liked the location a lot. I was worried about being "in" time square as I abhor that area - but true to everyone heres word it is right outside and a great location for seeing theater which my dd and I were doing. I was on a lower floor and I could hear the subway (just an fyi) at night. Not to the point where it was an issue but I was aware of it. If you can get breakfast included in your rate great - but if not I would avoid the place that is attached - over priced, and not very good. The rooms are generic.
I have no input on the Paramount -
If you're talking about the HGI Times Square, it's the area you know quite well on 8th ave. near the apts. you liked. Paramount has a nice lobby lounge, slightly different area. I'd try to look for a deal on the Iroquois which sometimes happens on travel-ticker.com
I stayed at the Paramount in 2006 and loved it. The location is superb for the theatre, far enough away from Times Square not to be a concern. I loved the decor and how they used paintings on canvas in lieu of headboards (although my room had a plain white canvas, which was a slight disappointment!) The lobby is a hoot and you can find hours of entertainment just people-watching there! I didn't think the room size was horribly small, but I suppose I'm used to European hotels. You make do. One drawback was that the bed was very low to the floor, almost no frame. I'm not in horrible shape and not that old, but I'm not fond of starting the day off with leg squats! LOL Everything was clean and staff was friendly. If the price is right, I'd stay there again in a heartbeat!
