NYC Metropolitan Museum CLOSED!

on Monday's!!. Ask me how I Know!

Was in the very cold NYC today. Decided to walk thru the park and up to the Met. Would have at least liked to warm up before heading back!

Reason is I am bringing this up is that I was far from the only one. There was an endless arrival of tourists who were very dissapointed that they 'forgot' or did not know that Monday is 'Closed' day. I live nearby and can return at another day, not sure that the tourists are in the same situation

Just a 'Public Service Announcement" for all of you 'future' NYC tourists!

Years ago, all the museums were closed on Mondays in New York. That made it easier to remember, but really bad for tourists. So the City convinced the museums to close on different days. For example, you could have walked uptown a few blocks to the Gugenheim Museum, which I believe is closed on Thursdays.

from the Met's website:

Q> When is the Museum open?

A> The Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday.

bmw732002, I understand what you're saying, but IMHO is would have been even better if your message title would have been "NYC Metropolitan Museum closed MONDAYS". When this message is pulled up weeks from now by someone seaching the site, they will either ignore it (figuring the museum was closed at one point) or panic!

Actually a few weeks ago, someone was planning a trip to NYC and when she presented possible itineraries for Fodorites' critiques, many people pointed out that Monday is the closed day at several museums. The irony is that had you stayed on the other side of the park, Museum of Natural History is one of the only museums I know that has always been open on Mondays!

Oh, well, I guess we all need to be reminded to recheck our info (either by calling, checking websites, or asking Fodorites) before making a trek (especially in this cold weather or NY's hot summers)

Yes I agree that the Posted title should have said Monday! I apologize to those that are in a panic!

I was in the city with time to kill and thought that a Museum Visit would be a grand idea. Never planned it , just a whim! But...Now I Know better!

Well, it's true that the Museum is closed to the general public on Mondays, but it's open for those who have special tickets. The Museum is hosting two "blockbuster" exhibits, one on Leonardo Da Vinci and the other Manet/Velasquez. Check the Museum's website and you can buy (for $50) special tickets to see these exhibits without the usual mob scene. For art lovers this could be a good idea, as some of the Leonardo drawings are so small, it's hard to see them with a crowd around.

As a person with an art history degree - no, really (ask me what I do now) - most art museums are closed on mondays everywhere, not just New York. I also found this out the hard way when visiting other cities and trying to check out their museums over long weekends, I finally caught on.
