NYC last week of March -Activities?
I will be in Manhattan for the last week of March with my 7 year old. Any inside tips on things to see/do? Don't have the money for Lion King and things like that. Looking more for "insider" suggestions. OVer Christmas we went to the TOYS R US, FAO, Citicorp Train Exhibit, Rockefeller skating. WHat to do for spring? THanks!

No insider tips (I don't think New Yorkers hide sites from tourists) but inexpensive or free and fun:
Walk the Brooklyn Bridge
Take the free Staten Island Ferry for the best views of Lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty
Metropolitan Museum of Art (your admission price includes admission to The Cloisters).
Ashes and Snow. Incredible.
Second Avenue Deli or Katz for the true NYC deli experience.
Take the Tram to Roosevelt Island.
Hit golf balls at the Chelsea Pier.

Take him/her to the FOrbes Galley on 5th Av at 14th St. It's free, and kids love it. It has exhibits of M. FOrbe's various collections (toy ships, toy soldiers, historical items, monopoly boards, etc.)
Climbing the rock mountains in central park is always fun on a nice day and of course the dinosaurs at the Museum of Natural history. Pick up a NY Magazine when you arrive, there's listing in the back of events specifically for kids, and many are free or very inexpensive.

I'd suggest the Museum of Natural History, Bronx Zoo, Central Park Zoo, Central Park Carousel, Ice Skating at Chelsea Pier, Dim Sum (lunch) in Chinatown, desert in Little Italy, take a water taxi, (cheaper than a tour, but a fun way to travel the southern part of Manhattan), Staten Island Ferry, (free, and great views of the city, especially at dusk), city buses, (great way to get a view of the city going by).
And get a book on the city, so while you are out and about, you can refer to the book for what you are seeing.
Also Macy's Flower Show should still be up, and that's fun to see the windows and walk aound the first floor of the store. They were putting the finishing touches on the store just yesterday.
Have fun while you are here.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I am definitely going to check almost all of them out - especially the Forbes museum one. That came up in a couple of web searches/ book store browses, but I had eliminated it...with your suggestion I think we'll go and have a look. Thanks again.

NY Magazine website has things listed each week for kids
http://nymetro.com/arts/theweek/kids/index.htm
They also have a family guide with a ton of performance things listed that are very inexpensive from family concerts at Carnegie Hall for $5 to short ballets for kids at Lincoln Center.

Thanks for all the suggestions! We had a wonderful time, the weather was great and we found much to do. We really enjoyed the Forbes Gallery toy museum, the Met was great (we used the audio tour and followed a map that has audio on certain items aimed at families), and Ashes and Snow. Our Statue of Liberty experience was not that great. We had to stand in line for tickets at Clinton Castle for 1 hour, once we had tickets it was a 2.5 hour wait for the ferry. Took the ferry across, how beautiful the city was, and once we landed on the island, we were told that it was a 3 hour wait for access to the platform or to climb. By this time, my son (7) was DONE with waiting. We took a couple of great pictures and stood in line for 1 hour to get off the island. Our experience with Empire State Building was pretty much the same (3 hour wait). Oh well, we met some great people in line!
Central Park rock climbing was great - as was Chinatown/SoHo shopping (I loved that part!). We had a good experience with the subway (as usual) - didn't take a taxi the whole week! We were proud of ourselves! Thanks for all the help - you all suggested some great ideas and our memories of this trip are priceless!
