NYC Jazz Clubs

I'm taking my boyfriend on a surprise trip to NYC in late April. He's a huge fan of jazz and I'm looking for recommendations on a jazz club to take him to. Also, how long in advance should tickets be bought? (If it matters, we're staying in Times Square at the Muse.)

Hi TO
I am also going to NY and have researched this somewhat. There is a club called Iridium Jazz Club on Broadway and 51 St. Every Monday night Les Paul plays there. (inventor of the electric guitar) Tickets can be purchased on-line at www.iridiumjazzclub.com

If you go to their website, it will tell you everything you want to know including menu and prices.
The tickets for Les Paul are $30 american.
Have Fun!

Another possibility is the Village Vanguard (178 7th Ave. South, in Greenwich Village). Full of history and still gets headline acts. Check out:
http://www.villagevanguard.com.

Also in the Village: the Blue Note (131 W. 3rd St.). Also full of history. Check out:

Cheaper and more in the mode of a club
you imagine as a jazz club (less turistic in one word...) : smoke on broadway in upper west side : smokejazz.com
Erik.
Nb : iridium, vilage vanguard and blue note are good, but more expensive. You can eat at iridium and Blue Note, no food at vanguard and smoke.

BB King's is in between 8th and 7th (right next to Times Square where you are staying). They have some great bands play in their smaller room, and big names in their large room. Enjoy!

Just thought I'd add that my sister and I took our teenage nephew to Iridium a couple of weeks ago for his first jazz club experience and it was great. Much to our surprise the food was very good too.

Another place with good food and good jazz is the Knickerbocker bar & grill on University Place in the village. I know websites have been posted before that might have all the places listed. Do a text search here for NYC AND jazz.

Some places don't sell tickets in advance.
