What do you call reasonable? Labor Day should have great prices but pools aren't common. Where is daughter livng? The Travel Inn (outdoor), the Skyline (indoor), the Holiday Inn Midtown (outdoor on roof) are some budget hotels with pool. The Millenium UN Plaza is usually pretty reasonable with gorgeous views and lovely enclosed rooftop pool.

Yes, prices that weekend should be a real bargain - no business travelers and many locals going to the shore or the mountains. Typically that weekend is very quiet in the city.

Daughter is in Brooklyn (Fort Greene), but not building trip just around her. Was hoping to find something around $200 range, but not seeing much, even without a pool. Maybe I'm being unrealistic. There are some in financial district in this range-in other areas I'm afraid they might be sketchy. Am I overly concerned about the bed bug issue?

That's not a very realistic budget, but it may be possible for that weekend. Trying to find a hotel in NYC with a pool is really a fool's errand. Most of the pools are indoors and are lap pools, so just keep that in mind.

The financial district has several nice hotels, and the reason why they tend to be cheaper is because they are relatively isolated from the rest of NYC. It's generally more convenient to stay north of Canal Street.

Bed bugs are not really something that should concern you. Almost all major hotels in NYC have had bedbug problems at one time or another. Most reports are wildly exaggerated and overhyped. When bedbugs are found, the rooms are taken out of service, treated, and then put back into service when they are ready to go. By the time you read about the problem, it's long been corrected.

There are a number of hotels in Brookyn, that you might consider.

Another strategy would be to take hotel without a pool and swim at one of the city pools...I can give you more info on that if you like.

City public pools are fine for kids - but they are typically packed elbow to elbow with lines of people waiting to get in (since occupancy is limited by law).

If you can;t find a hotel with a pool (and there aren't many) you might look into nearby health clubs with a pool - and find out the cost of a short-term pass.

I swim 5 days a week, year round at a NYC indoor public pool and have no trouble getting a lane for laps. I've been swimming at the same pool for more than 30 years!

The outdoor pools can get very crowded, however, so one would either go at opening time or forego the lap swimming.

Went with an Expedia package at the Millenium Hilton-the Tripadvisor reviews were great and they have a pool, which hopefully won't be crowded. I don't imagine we'll have a bedbug problem.

Oh dear ... I wish you'd asked about that particular hotel before booking. Bedbugs aren't the problem you need to worry about there. Noise is.

That hotel faces directly into the construction site for the new World Trade Center, and it's busy night and day. Lots of noise complaints there for rooms that face the construction, which is supposed to stop at night but doesn't. It's a very nice hotel, and if you are staying downtown, it's one of the best locations for proximity to transit (subway across the street, as well as PATH). But the construction (for me) is a real downside. Good luck.

Thanks, Doug. I knew there was construction, but the most recent reviews made no mention of noise and were glowing. I guess we'll see-the package is non-refundable. We will be there over the weekend, too, so maybe it won't be a problem.

It's supposed to be better now, and the hotel has done some mitigation. Hopefully, it will work out, but I'm not optimistic. The hotel itself has been complaining to the city about construction noise for 2 years now.

True, most of the big construction outdoors is now finished, so I"m sure that helps as well, but the work goes on 7 days as week 24 hours a day.
