NYC hotel needed for November 16-20

Hello. I need help finding a decent hotel in a good location for a reasonable price in Manhattan. On this website, I keep seeing all of the great hotel deals that people have gotten in NYC. I can't seem to find any of those deals. Two of us are driving (to save money) from Michigan to NYC in November. We will be arriving on the 16th and leaving on the 20th. We've never been to NYC. We want to do the typical tourist things while we are there - Broadway show, 9/11 Memorial, Empire State Building, Central Park, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Statue of Liberty, etc.

I thought we should stay in the Times Square area but I am open to suggestions. Also, does anyone have any tips on getting a good deal on a hotel? Can someone suggest a hotel that you would fit our needs? I would like to find something around $200-$250 per night (or cheaper if possible).

We also need 2 beds (we are not a couple) and of course we will have to park our car.

Any help you can give me would really be appreciated

Why do you think you "should" stay in Times Square?
That's a low budget for fall in Manhattan and parking can be pricey.
The Travel Inn and Skyline are two places with relatively inexpensive parking.
Another option is to consider staying in Long Island City, Queens. It's a short subway ride to Manhattan, but often less expensive. Recommended hotels include Verve, Country Inn and Suites, Home2Suites--and there are others.

Depending on where you live you may find it cheaper to take the train. A car will be an expensive nuisance in NYC.

You might look at the Jane or the Pod hotels. They are not around Times Square but I would not chose to stay there, and public transport works quite well - use hopstop.com.

Unfortunatelt you are coming to the city at the most crowded and expensive time of year. I would guess that a lot of the "deals" you are seeing are at other times of year (in Jan/Feb hotels are practically free and through August prices will be way lower than they are in Nov).

The average hotel (not luxury) in NYC in mid season is about $260 per night - in November the averages places will be substantially higher than that. You budget is unrealistically low unless you either want someplace VERY basic or you look outside Manhattan. And expect to pay $30 to $40 per night to park a car. Also the standard room is one double bed for 2 people since rooms are typically small due to high real estate prices and taxes. To get two double beds you are already looking for a more upscale room.

Jane is one of the least expensive hotels in the city - but rooms are minute and often have shared baths. Same for the Pod. Times Square is NOT necessary - not even very pleasant, since there isn't that much to see/do there except for theater. As long as the hotel is near the subway you will have easy access to the city.

I have looked at a couple of reliable budget hotels and they are either already booked. You might want to consider the Newton - a relaible budget property on the upper west side. They are offering a deluxe double - 2 double beds and private bath - for your dates for only about $1100. Parking would be about $35 per night extra. BUT - if you want this I would grab it NOW - it will not last.

This area is mid/upscale residential, with immediate subway access, avenues lined with modest/moderate restaurants of almost every possible ethnicity and just 2 express stops from Times Square and the rest of the city. An easy walk to Central Park and many of the museums that line the east and west side of the park. IMHO this is a MUCH better choice than getting stuck in Jersey or LIC.

You should get discount tickets to Broadway shows now via broadwaybox.com (hits may already be sold out for your dates and only older shows usually discount). Also get tickets for SoL NOW via the website of the National Park Service or you risk very long waits in line to both buy ferry tickets and then wait to get on one. You need to arrive at South Ferry about 45 minutes before the departure of your scheduled ferry since there is airline type security to get on the ferry and large backpacks are not allowed.

We've stayed at the Travel Inn (42nd and 10th) twice in the last two months - the location is excellent if you're driving (easy in/out via the Lincoln Tunnel); parking is onsite and reasonably priced ($20/night); they have double doubles and frigs in the rooms, which admittedly are a little dated but very clean. This trip we were put in one of the newly renovated rooms (marble/chrome/duvets) which means the price won't stay low for long! They are showing availability for your dates at $175/night (plus taxes and they charge for internet)

I agree with the poster who said a car in NYC is a liability but if you do drive and you are on a budget you need to find a hotel with parking.

The reviews of the Travel Inn are mixed but do meet your criteria see
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Rev...k.html#REVIEWS

What airport do you fly out of? Southwest has a wanna get away fare from Grand rapids via St. Louis to New York (LGA) for $241.20 for your dates. Again if you decide on this you need to book ASAP.

You may also like the Milburn hotel on the upper west side http://www.milburnhotel.com if you decide to travel other then by car. Breakfast included in the rate.

Good luck and come back with any additional questions.

New York you will love it.

Another option, at one of my favorite low-moderate rate hotels in NYC:

The Cosmopolitan in Tribeca is offering 25% off their usual rates for all of Oct. and Nov.

Go to their website and click on Specials. You will see the Fall Special rate their, click on it.

They have a two double bed room with free wifi, soundproof windows, private bath, satellite TC, etc. for $205.50 a night.

Hotel is nice , great front desk, great location next to the subway stop, lots of good restaurants around it. I stay there often (and I stay at a lot of other hotels in NYC also), and always like it.

I have parked in that area for $35 a night in a garage. I am not sure what the Cosmopolitan recommends re parking, but it is an easy call to their front desk to ask.

Thank you very much for all of the advice. I didn't realize November was a more expensive time to travel to NYC. I'll be checking out all of your suggestions. I also took a look at flying to NYC. Through Delta Vacations I was able to find what seemed like some reasonable deals for hotel and direct flight out of Detroit. Can someone comment on these 2 possible hotels. I could get round trip airfare, direct flights, 4 nights stay at the Crowne Plaza Times Square with 2 double beds for 2 people for a total cost of $1680. So for only $840 per person we would get the hotel and air. I know nothing about the Crowne Plaza. I read a little about it through tripadvisor and it seemed to have some decent comments. What do you think? How is that location?

For a little bit more ($1750) we could get air and hotel at the Best Western Premier in Herald Square.

Any thoughts on these 2 deals? How do these 2 hotels compare with the hotels that you were suggesting?

Originally, we were going to drive to save money but maybe driving would cost just as much. It would cost us $200 in gas and it sounds like with parking we would be looking at about $300 per night for 4 nights. That gets us up to $1400. I know we will have to get a cab to/from the airport but suddenly $1680 at the Crowne Plaza doesn't sound bad.

Again, I can't tell you how much I appreciate your advice.

Which airport are the flights into? You will need cab only from LGA. If the flights come into JFK or EWR there are public transit options (from but to train or subway) to get from the airport into midtown.

Sorry can;t help with Best Western - is that price for two double beds? If it's not specific assume it will be only one bed. I would go for Times Square versus Herald Square since you have more restaurant options - there are a ton of places along 9th Ave.

In order to do a comparison I would look at the cost of the flight and the cost of the hotel if booked directly by you and see what the difference is.

For flying out of Detroit take a look at www.kayak.com to see what the cheapest flight might be. This does not include Southwest and you need to look at their website direct. I only looked briefly but it looked like on American to LGA there was a round trip flight for $214.00 - they charge for checked bags.

You may like to look at www.hotels.com to read the reviews on the hotels you are considering.

AA is showing $215 round trip with good nonstop from Detroit into LGA.

So for that $1700 you should be able to do a lot better than the Best Western. Maybe Fairfield Inn Times Square with breakfast included?

Check reviews for Hotel St. James, good location and $1050 including taxes for your 4 nights (on booking.com and it's cancellable.) So your room & flights are $1500

Someone upthread mentioned Pod. Is that Pod 51? Haven't stayed there myself but, if you're looking for budget, the reviews seem okay. They have shared baths and "only two rooms left" with bunk beds for 2 people. Look on Orbitz for your dates with promo code "GETHAPPY" and it'll run you around $540 for 4 nights. Minimal $'s for NYC standards and how much time are you going to spend in the room anyways?

IMO the Crowne Plaza at TS is fine and probably as good a hotel as most in that area. I've used it once but usually stay at the nearby Marquis Marriott.

BE AWARE that staying in TS is fine IF your main activity is seeing shows (as mine usually is) AND you prefer to walk to the theatres. If you are only going to see one show I would not make staying in TS a big priority.

Since you are driving, you may want to consider the Travel Inn which provides free parking. Parking is very expensive in NYC and that's quite a deal. It's a basic hotel and the reviews can help you decide if it's something you are interested in. If you stay at another hotel, be prepared to stay for pricey parking.

starrs - FYI - Travel Inn now charges for parking but it's a reasonable $20/night and it's on site so it's easy in and out.

Hello, thanks for the information. I'm still working on this trip. I have a question about airports. If we are staying in midtown Manhattan which is the best airport to fly into? Kennedy, Laguardia, or Newark? We will probably take a cab from the airport. Is there much of a difference in price?
