NYC help!!

I am taking my mother to NYC for the first time in mid December. How is the weather at this time? Is it very very cold? Also, I would like to know the cheapest places to shop and eat. Which area of NYC? We love bargains. Are the bus and subway recommended? Are the Broadway shows recommended? What should we definitely NOT miss? Thanks so much guys.

From the broad scope of your questions, you obviously have not done any research. I suggest you do some research on line or in travel books and THEN come back with more specific questions!

Agreed -

Read the New York sectin in destinations above

Do the same for the New York section in Frommers.com

Read at least one or two guide books - get from the library if you don;t want to buy until you decide which is best.

A couple of short answers:

December is by far the busiest and most expensive time of the year to be in New York.

You don;t say where you are from so can;t give you comparisons - but yes - New York in the winter is cold - highs can range from the low 40's to the 20s. It is often in the teens at night. A lot of snow is uncommon before Christmas (but we usually have a couple of inches once or twice in Dec - and two years ago at Christmas we had 12").

Also do a search of this forum. You'll find dozens of threads about NYC, including NYC shopping, weather, dining, etc.

I've been to NYC twice before. I went in November last year and it wasn't THAT cold. I'm just wondering how it will be in December.
I had a hotel room with a view of the Empire State Building, so I didn't bother going to see it. But I would like to know the good tourist places that we should definitely see.
Also, we are on a budget but don't want to eat at disgusting restaurants. We want to taste what NY has to offer.

As others have mentioned, more research on your part is in order.

As others have said you really have to do some research then post specific questions. Your questions are much, much too broad. Without know more about you and what you are looking for in a vacation we can only give you general answers to general questions. For instance:

How's the weather? - Seasonal - it can be in the 50's or 20's.
Is it very cold? - Not as cold as the North Pole.
What's the cheapest place to shop - By far the cheapest would be one of the many "Dollar Stores" but they may not sell what you are looking for.
What's the cheapest place to eat - there are 1,000's of restaurants in NYC but perhaps the cheapest meal will be a hot dog from a Street Vendor.
Are buses and subway's recommended? - only if you are going where they go.
Are Broadway shows recommended? - only if you like seeing live performances.

Obviously the above resopnses are given "tongue-in-cheek" but you get the idea. Tell us more about your likes and dislikes, what you want to see, etc. then you'll get a much better response. Do a bit of research on this forum first - there are literally hundreds of threads about where to eat, what to do and what to see in NYC.

aicirtap, you still don't seem to get it! RESEARCH is the best answer.
PS: Seeing the Empire State Building from your hotel window is not quite the same as taking an elevator to the top of that famous landmark!

Hi aicirtap.

Some of the cheapest places to eat are found on the lower East Side and in Chinatown, but there are restaurants spread out all over town that you would probably find acceptable. A good thing about NYC is that the restaurants post their menus outside where you can see what they have and the cost. You can browse around at menupages.com. For shopping, Chinatown again is great. You’ll find if you browse around this forum that many posters recommend Century 21 as a great, cheap place to shop. It’s near the WTC site.

Busses and subways are recommended but so are taxis and walking depending on the conditions.

Don’t understand “Are the Broadway shows recommended?” Maybe you mean “Which Broadway shows are recommended?” Many people ask other posters favorite Broadway and off-Broadway shows and you’ll find them if you type in “Broadway” and hit search on the home page.

I see this is your first post so welcome.

Yes to the bus and subway. Yes to Broadway shows. We always walk a lot.

There are many people on this board that can help you. Just be a little more specific with your questions. It would also help if you let us know how long you and your mother will be in NYC? How much of this time to you intend to spend shopping? Have you decided on a hotel?

Many people recommend the hop on and off bus.

Hope you will post back with specific questions. Enjoy NYC one of my favorite places.

Sandy

I think most of your questions are quite specific enough. For some reason, cheap eats isn't talked about too much on this site so you probably won't find very much info.

The weather in Dec. can vary, but as others have said, it will be somewhat cold. Probably no snow though.

Yes, there are literally TONS of cheap places to eat in NYC. You can't beat a hot dog off the street. The 2 famous hot dog places, Gray's Papaya and Papaya King, are cheap as well. Nathan's is cheap too for hot dogs and other fast food. Most places in Chinatown are cheap. Most bagel places are cheap too, such as Ess-a-Bagel. The Lower East Side has tons of cheap eats. Greenwich also has some such as Mamoun's Falafel.

I would recommend seeing a Broadway show. It's one of the must-do things in NYC.

Some of the other things not to miss are of course the usual stuff like the Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, Central Park, Ground Zero, etc.

For cheap eats check out the Village Voice web site - they recently published a list of the 100 best cheap restaurants in NYC.
