fringe fest has spawned VERY FEW broadway hits (Urinetown) - go for the experience, for the sheer fun of seeing something strange and new but don't delude yourself that it's even off-broadway. NOT to put down the fringe at all - it's wonderful - but funky more than Broadway.

And if you are saying Avenue Q, keep in mind RObert Lopez is a Yale-educated musical writer and Av Q premiered at the prestigious IO Neill musical Theatre festival before it ever hit NY. Not the typical fringe show.

Silence the Musical and some really interesting one person shows started at the Fringe. It is a way more affordable New York experience than agonizing over which way over priced Broadway ticket to buy.

And, these shows will get you out of Times Square to interesting neighborhoods.

Does the Fringe Festival have anything to do with "The New York Dream Up Festival", which runs from 8/15-8/29?

I never heard of the latter but I just got an e-mail yesterday about someone I know who has a play running in it for 5 performances. It's a comedy called "Starting Up" at the Theater for the New City on First Av. at 10th St.

In many ways isn't Fringe the anti-Broadway festival. It is rarely written and preformed for mass consumption and it revels in its idiosyncratic ideas.

Adu If by anti Broadway you mean low budget definitely. panecott I know nothing about the NY Dream Up Festival but it also sounds interesting . Let us know how your friends play goes.

Sue, the work at the Fringe are just not mainstream. And only on occasion does Broadway embrace something that is not mainstream.

The problem is notoriety. I remember the first Halloween and Gay Pride Day parades. This were disorganized affairs filled with a sense of freedom and fun and now, especially the Halloween parade, they have lost their spontaneity and sense of silliness. That is what happens when things become too conscious of what they are.

Well the shows that I've picked have not been wonderful although Aloma who was at the GTG saw some that she thought were very good. I did love Standby: the Musical today though.

SueNYC, I worked today at Venue #13 and was able to see "Ticket 2 Eternity." The other play I did not get to see was "Ungrateful Daughter" (sold out).

I just saw "We Crazy, Right?" a funny and moving one man show about two gay dads' adoption struggle and adjustment to parenting in the 'burbs. Very small venue, a tiny room off a restaurant. Thought from the picture of the venue - Jimmy 43 - it was a deli, so we ate elsewhere, but turns out it was a cool little restaurant and I'm sorry we didn't eat there.

I love the opportunity to see actors in such an intimate space.

Hi skate - you are the 2nd person who said that to me. A friend from the Y and my local coffee shop also saw it this weekend. She actually knows the performer and she was wondering how someone outside the adoption/foster care world would relate. I'll tell her you loved it. She also said she wished she hadn't eaten beforehand. So I will have lunch there on Friday before I see the show!

I liked Kurt Douglas and caught up with Awayagain afterwards. Am looking forward to We Crazy.

Today, I worked and saw "20 Somethings" a nice play.

(NOT the Fringe Festival but last night I saw the first preview of Chaplin and it is wonderful. Guess I better post this in the Broadway thread.)

Saw We Crazy today. It was great and I voted for it and I hope it ends up in Encores. Also, stumbled on the original Vanessa Dumplings on Eldridge St while exploring earlier in the day. 4 amazing fried dumplings for $1.

Unfortunately Jimmy 43 wasn't serving lunch because of a delivery problem so I will have to try the food another time.

Yesterday, I saw "Ungrateful Daughter" and "Pulp Shakespeare". Today, I saw "Essence A Yiddish Theatre Dim Sum", The three plays are very good.

I will try to go to the outdoor opera tonight. The Fringe website will post the ENCORES when they are ready to do so. Am going to try to go to the Art Show on Governor's Island this weekend and the Brooklyn stuff when I return.
