Hi guys,
I'm going to be visiting New York next month and driving from Norfolk, Va. With exception of Atlanta, I've never driven in a big city and barely feel up to the task. I think parking well outside of the city and taking some type of public transit in. Does anyone have any suggestions as to a safe place to park my car for 4 days?

You will want to pick one of the larger NJ TRansit staions - like MetroPark - that have large packing facilties. The lots in many commuter towns are limited to town residents with stickers, are full by about 6 am and are not safe places to elave cars overnight.
Perhaps someone else who lives in Jersey can suggest another large, relatively safe lot you might want to consider.
If you'll be heading back to VA after your visit to NYC, and consider taking Amtrak, IMO MetroPark is a very good suggestion. (You can take NJ Transit there too, but it will take a lot longer to get into NYC.) Both Amtrak and NJ Transit arrive into Penn Station in NYC.
If you're open to driving closer to the city, consider the ferry at lincoln harbor. While the actual lot is not the best in the world (there are lots of pot holes), it's $10/day and you can just hop on the ferry to get to the city. I've parked there overnight on a number of occasions and never had any issues.
Agree with both suggestions- Metropark in Iselin, NJ or closer to Manhattan, the Port Imperial ferry terminal in Weehawken, NJ run by nywaterway.com
I'd love to drive closer, but I'm intimidated. I'm not the greatest of drivers and don't have much experience in the way of high volume areas. Would you say the traffic is I should be concerned about, if I try to creep closer?

Sorry - but you will have high volume traffic most of the way through NJ and anywhere near NYC. The only way to avoid it is to fly or take the train. If you're going to be here several days - why drive - instead of one of the other options?
I agree. Why drive at all. Parking fees, going to city then back. Take a plane instead.
I am very comfortable driving in Manhattan but choose to park the car at the Metropark commuter train station because overall it's cheaper than parking in the city.
If you were starting in DC, the bus or train might be best.
Even flying from DC is less than half what it cost to fly from Norfolk to NYC.
From Norfolk, driving IS your best option.
