Have just read NYT piece on nightmare conditions at LGA w new construction getting started. That's my usual portal comng into NYC. Have never flown into Newark. Arriving on a Sunday, late october....should i think abt booking a flite into Newark and using their Airport Exprss coach ($16, it appears) to get to Grand Central? Thanks!

I read the same thing and am calling the airline to see of they'll switch our Sept. flight to EWR. From NY Penn Station on weat aide , you can take NJ Transit to connect to EWR airport train.keep your train ticket as it is needed to exit.

I have the same problem. I'm going to New York in mid-October but the NYT article about LaGuardia spooked me. I just talked to my daughter, who lives in New York. She flew out of LGA yesterday on Delta and had no problem. She was even running late as usual and still made her flight. So I'm wondering if it's worth the extra hassle or using Newark. The shuttle sounds complicated and cab fare is upwards of $50 to $75.

Just used LGA in July. If you are flying at peak hours, it could be a mess. If you are flying off hours, it should be OK.

Maybe the NYT article will motivate the Port Authority to do something smart. It once happened in 1967.

Without question, the best option from EWR is the train. It's a relatively quick, 30- to 45-minute trip into the city from most terminals. If you are not arriving during rush hour, then the bus can be a viable option, but it can easily take twice as long as the train. Once you are in Manhattan, you have myriad options, depending on where you are staying.

I do agree that LGA looks to be a not very good option for up to the next 3 years, so you have to consider carefully the day and time when you are flying into or out of the airport. I do think they will get the traffic more under control, but until they have a good system in place, it's going to be an occasional nightmare.

What could be considered the off-peak hours & days to fly in/out of LaGuardia?

July is immaterial. This is a problem that stated last week when the reconstruction of LGA began and apparently was very badly planned so buses and cars were so blocked they could not get into the airport. MTA promised they would fix it in the next couple of days. Have not been past there so don't know if they have done so or not.

The news stories on the delays have diminished but don't know if that is a sign of improvement or boredom and moving on to the next story of the day.

Late October is nearing the peak of tourist season, so there will be a lot of travelers. Fridays and Mondays are likely to be among the worst days of the week regardless of the time. Right now, since the construction is just beginning and mitigation efforts are in their beginning stages, I don't think you can assume any specific time will be "good".
