Don't stay in New Jersey. Check out rates for the Travel Inn (free parking) in Manhattan as well as exploring bidding options on priceline.

Parking in Manhattan can easily cost you $50+ per day.

Consider parking your car on the NJ side, taking NJTransit into town.

The hassle of driving, parking, and the price you pay outweighs any savings you may save, if any.

At the risk of sounding rude, if you are considering staying in New Jersey for an already short Manhattan weekend, then it is really pointless to ask for any advice on best utilizing your time. You've already built in the biggest waste of time there is.

Can't help with hotels, but I agree that you might do better to either stay in Manhattan (find a hotel with parking vouchers) or leave the car in NJ and take the train in (NJ Transit). Parking in NYC is expensive and public transportation is cheap.

Get a local arts publication to find out about free concerts, cheap show tickes, and such... find out if you can get a good 2-day subway pass.

Free and cheap things to do:

Sat night: Hang out in Times Square and count limousines. Have dessert/coffee in a restuarnt overlooking the crowds, and people-watch. Radio City Music Hall has generally a less expensive show than the real Broadway.

Sun morning: Walk through Central Park, read the Sunday paper on a park bench, stroll along 5th avenue and windowshop. Maybe splurge and go to the top of the Empire State Building, and admire the view.

Long walk, subway or bus to south end;
Lunch in Chinatown or 7th street seaport area.

Visit the WTC site; Battery Park, and take a ride on the Ferry; maybe visit Statue of Liberty and/or Ellis Island.

The only way I know to get a hotel in the decent part of NJ near New York for anything close to $50 is to use Priceline. Have no idea what they are offering - but you will need to find a place the offers either a free shuttle or easy access to local transit.

(You can;t take a car in and out of NYC and New Jersey - between tunnel/bridge tolls and parking for two days that will cost more than $50.)

If you are flying in don;t rent a car.

If you are driving in park your car at one of the larger train stations in New Jersey (check out the NJTransit web site for parkig info), take the train into the city and try one of the local youth hostels.

If you google above you will find some specifics and web sites to search. The one at 103rd/ & Amsterdam is popular with european budget travelers who seem happy with it.

I don;t know what the rest of your budget is - or where you're from - but frankly the fact that you;re looking to find a hotel for $50 has me scared that you really may not have enough money to cover the trip at all - even subways, basic meals etc.

And while there many free/low cost things to do in NYC - transportation and food are not among them.

Sorry I can't help you with the lodging.I use AAA and have gotten incredible rates complete with a package for dinner and play for personal use.I can help you with cheap fun things to do since I bring students to NYC each summer. The Staten Island Ferry is FREE and gives a great view of the Statue of Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge and lower Manhatten. Chinatown is fun and The Dumpling House is a great place to eat for little money. NYC Public Library (the one with the lions) is incredible to walk through and has free art exhibits. You need to check your items in and that is a great relief if you have been carrying a heavy load!Central Park is enjoyable and don't forget to check out the famous redtailed Hawk-Pale Male-in Mary Tyler Moore's building. His look out is near the boat pond(ask any park worker). I personally avoid famous tourist sights due to unbelievable long lines!3 and 4 course meals on restaurant row in Time Square are beyond cheap!!Ocha-$10.00 Hourglass Tavern $15.00,etc.The chicken gyros on the carts are still my students favorites.Have fun!

Whatever you do, do NOT drive into Manhattan to see the sights. You'll waste most of your time in traffic and dealing with your vehicle, not to mention the expense.

$50 for a hotel? Yikes. I fear if you find one it'll be the kind of place that rents by the hour, if you know what I mean. If you can stay in Manhattan, do so.

I am a New Yorker and really cheap old goat.

Free and safe parking. Three neighborhoods come to mind, Woodside, College Point, and Whitestone. Only Woodside is within the range of the subway. The others are a quick bus ride to the subway.

I leave a 2 year old Jeep Liberty parked on the streets in these and worse neighborhoods regularly without incident. Flashy expensive cars might be vandalized or broken into. Older cars in good condition might me stolen for parts. However, the theft / vandalism rates are lower than ever, so I wouldn't worry. Though, I wouldn't leave a Mercedes SL600 out there, nor would I leave a nine year old Honda Accord in perfect condition. Also make sure that no packages / suitcases are visible in your car.

Alternate side parking: There are two varieties the two day and the one day. On two day streets on side would say no Parking Monday and Thursday from 8:30 to 10:00 AM. The other side would say No Parking Tuesday and Friday 8:30 to 10:00 am. On one day alternate streets parking would not be allowed for just one morning.

There are entire neighborhoods where there is no alternate side parking. Simply find a curb to park at least 15 feet from a fire hydrant and not in a driveway and you can park your car in theory forever.

With that said here is where to look.

Woodside: There is a subway station at Northern Boulevard and 54th street. A 10 minute ride and you are in midtown Manhattan. There are many streets north of northern boulevard that are very safe, very free, and very convenient to that subway stop. There is no alternate side parking there (yet). Good streets are 54th - 60th between Northern Boulevard and 30th avenue.

Whitestone: This is a very high end neighborhood with plenty of no-alternate parking. Look along Clintonville Street, 10th, 9th, 8th, etc.. avenues.

College Point: Park on or near College Point Boulevard. The residential neighborhood begins at 25th Road and goes all the way North to 4th avenue. You should easily find a spot within a block of the bus stop South of 20th avenue. Take the q65 bus 15 minutes to Main Street. Check out Chinatown Queens there. Take the #7 subway to Manhattan.

That's free parking. For cheap hotels look online.

For you and anyone else who needs free NY parking respond to this thread.
