NYC--nice restaurant in East 40s?

I would like to come up with a nice restaurant in the East 40s, cozy, not loud, not super-young in crowd, not expensive, neighborhoody. Ethnic okay. Full bar please (no "just wine" places, I can't metabolize wine) (only tequila, since you asked).

How about West 40s? The new Citarella restaurant is just great! Full bar, great food and pretty place.

The challenge to Fodorites is: East 40s. But--you can tell me West 40s ones too. (Also I know some West 40s places.)

Citarella's, is it owned by the fish store? Is it expensive?

Elizabeth: Citarella is owned by the fish people and is top dollar, does not fit your criteria on many counts. The type of restaurant you describe unfortunately is a dying breed. Three that might fit the bill (although all are on the E. 50's) are:

Zarela on 2nd Avenue, excellant Mexican and killer Margarita's. Ask to sit on the ground floor near the bar, very convivial.

Gino's on Lexington, good southern Italian and well heeled older crowd, no credit cards.

Metropolitan Cafe on 1st Avenue, good American fare, convivial atmosphere with neighborhood crowd. Music some evenings. This one probably best fits your criteria and least expensive of the three.

If I think of any others, I'll post again.

There's not so much that's really "neighborhoody" in the East 40s because it is largely office buildings.

I'd recommend Hapon (Japanese on East 43rd Street -- across from the more expensive and trendy Sushi Yasuda. Both are excellent, but Hapon is more reasonable) or Hizen (another Japanese on East 45th. If you have 4 or more people in your party, you can sit upstairs in traditional seating (shoes off, sit on chair backs on floor, etc.).

I haven't been, but have been told that Nanni's is wonderful Italian food on East 46th Street.

Check in Zagat's for more places that fit your specifications: www.zagat.com. Hope this helps.

It's a very short distance north, but there are several good, neighborhood-type restaurants on Second Avenue in the 50-52 Street range. Martell's Grill. Jameson's. The list goes on.
