NY to Asheville then country place to stay

I will be driving to Asheville NC with my husband in late April from New York and booked three nights in downtown Asheville. That should give us 4 days in the area and I am hoping to stay one or two nights nearby in a a more country area. Does anyone have a recommended place to stay in the Pisgah state forest area? We do not want to camp. Or in the Shenandoah national park area on the way back up to New York. Any recommendations appreciated as long as they are not further south from Asheville. Thank you

It's an amazing place and I adore Valle Crucis - which is actually IN the Pisgah Forest. You can stay in the historic inn rooms or one of the cottages (restored farm buildings). The restaurant there is fabulous.

The original Mast General Store is down the road -

and there is shopping, etc. in nearby Boone or Banner Elk. Plenty of things to do in the area, or just relax at the inn.

Thanks Starrs for your suggestion. I think I have seen the Mast General Store on another post, maybe yours. FantasyDrafKit. Thanks for the reviews. That was my next step.
What do you all think of taking the least expensive room in the rafters? It is called Aunt Leona

Closer to Asheville you might try the Pisgah Inn with beautiful views and a decent restaurant in the Pisgah National Forest on Blue Ridge Parkway, or on the higher-price-end there is the Highland Lake Inn in Highlands or the Swag in Waynesville.

Thank you for you suggestions but I was looking for a place that was further north so we could start to make our way home. I was about to book the Mast Farm in but saw that it is 10.5 hours from New York.

Does anyone have a country inn they could recommend say, closer to Roanoke Va but in the a rural area? Would greatly appreciate it. Thank you

You could go a bit further up the Parkway to around Little Switzerland.
Or I am sure on up toward Virginia there are inns and such. Do a search of the Blue Ridge Parkway and towns just off of it.

I couldn't resist, so we booked two nights at the Mart Farm Inn. We can either find a place to stay on the way back to New York or drive straight through. I remembered that we twice drove straight through to the Outer Banks with Grandma and kids in tow. I don't know why I was being a wimp this time. Guess I'm getting old. lol thanks again for your suggestions.

Yay! You will love it! Be sure to make reservations for dinner and don't miss the original Mast General Store. Banner Elk is a nice little town to wander for shops, etc.

We did a sleigh ride nearby one winter and there may be horseback riding tours if that's of interest. Or just relax and enjoy the beauty of the valley.

Go to Boone, Blowing Rock, and Grandfather Mountain/Linville while you are in that area. Visit Crossnore school for an interesting side note to the mountains.
Driving straight through shouldn't really be too bad. We have done it from Charlotte.

And while you are there read the book Miracle in the Mountains about Crossnore and its founders.
