NY Finger Lakes

I am just starting to do research on the NY Finger Lakes. DH and I will be driving from NC in June. There are so many options: which lake, which town? We plan to stay 4-5 days and do day trips for wineries, antiques, moderate hiking, and sightseeing. We have talked about a day trip to Niagara Falls as well. We also enjoy hanging out on a deck or porch and appreciating beautiful views.

Are there any Fodorites out there who have had a good or bad experience that they would like to share? I'm just trying to narrow down my choices here. We are not interested in a spa experience, but we would not rule out a B & B. Our comfort price range is $150-200 per night.

Thanks.

My favorite town in the Finger Lakes is Skaneateles, located southwest of Syracuse. The Sherwood Inn is a nice place to stay. I have also been to (and enjoyed) Ithaca (probably the biggest city in the Finger Lakes with more to do), Geneva and Canandaigua.

Niagara Falls is about 2 1/2 hours from Skaneateles and an easy drive. I would recommend that you spend 2 days there (one overnight) and see both the Falls and Niagara on the Lake which is a short drive from the falls. There are some nice wineries around there and Niagara on the Lake is filled with shops, restaurants and nice hotels and b & b's.

If you do a search here for the Finger Lakes you'll find some old threads with good information. Good luck!

Hi, Loisde. You are right. There are a lot of great places to visit in the Finger Lakes. My suggestion would be to call us at Finger Lakes Tourism Alliance. We help people answer this question every day. We are the experts on having fun in this beautiful region, and there is never any charge for our help. The number is 800-530-7488. Or, you could just log on to FingerLakes.org a comprehensive list of attractions, accomodations, and more. Hope that helps!

Letchworth State Park is beautiful (we spent our honeymoon there almost 30 years ago). We stayed at the Glen Iris Inn which is (or was) located in the park...I'd google it for you, but am on my way out. The Corning Glass Museum was also very interesting (it had JUST opened that spring). Good luck and have a lovely time.
