NY Bars and Clubs

I'm working just outside of NY on the Jersey side and am looking for a few bars to visit when a buddy of mine comes in town later this week. The hotel shuttle drops us off at 41st and 7th Ave. We're looking for a bar with a young professional crowd. Nothing too trendy. Live 70s R&B is a plus. Limited techno and rap. I have a rental car, but prefer to travel by taxi if we have to stray far from the shuttle drop off.
