NV to AZ to UT - Am I Doing This Right?

Hello All!

I am just trying to iron out my itinerary a bit and was wondering if you could offer your advice. I've read through many other posts and have made alterations accordingly (i.e. traveling our loop in a counterclockwise direction, adding Bryce, etc.) but wanted to see if any other changes would be recommended before beginning all of our hotel bookings. I'm going to go through Hotwire for a few of our stops, so I will be locked in once I get going. Our Mini All American Road Trip over Spring Break with Mom, Dad, and our two girls (ages 9 and 6.5) looks like this:

Day 1: Fly into Vegas

Day 2: Sedona

Day 3: Sedona

Day 4: Grand Canyon

Day 5: Page, AZ (Lower Antelope Canyon tour and Horseshoe Bend are our only activities here - does it make sense to overnight here? To help ease our pace?)

Day 6: Bryce Canyon National Park

Day 7: Zion National Park

Day 8: Zion National Park

Day 9: Zion, back to Vegas

Day 10: Fly home...

Changes? Edits? I'm all ears! Our family loves to hike, and despite our young girls ages, their stamina can be quite impressive. Thanks to all for their advice.

Check the Hotwire prices then go to the hotels/motels and see if you can match the price hotwire quotes. You can usually cancel the reservations made yourself if something comes up last minute.

When you say Day 1 etc. do you mean that you plan to spend the night there or is that where you are planning to spend the day?

If Day 4 is a night in Grand Canyon, then you might have trouble finding lodging in the park. There are two concessions that handle lodging there, one for elTovar, Bright Angel, Thunderbird, Kachina and Maswick, and one for Yavapai. Do call both and keep trying as people do cancel and a site like Hotwire would not be the best source for last minute slots. In the mean time, if this night is after you visit GC, make a reservation at Cameron Trading Post since you will be heading for Page after Grand Canyon and you will be closer to Page than you would if you reserved on the other side.

If you are planning to do the Page activities in the earlier part of the day, you could be well on your way to Bryce that day. If you don't want to drive all the way to Bryce, look for lodging in Kanab, UT where there are several places to stay.

your itinerary looks ok to me.

Be aware that in Bryce is at 8000+ feet elevation and you should be prepared for winter weather in March & April, even early May. That means nighttime/morning temperatures below freezing, and the real possibility of snow.

I would still go, but don't be expecting to wear shorts. Ditto for Grand Canyon.

Idk. I would skip Sedona and add in a night to the GC and Bryce to allow time to slow down and enjoy. I am not big on one nighters.

Thank you everyone for your feedback!

Emalloy, as it is right now the only reservation I have made is for Yuvapai Lodge because of the sold out reputation the lodgings have within the park. I was actually quite surprised that only one night of the hotel is sold out for the whole month of March. I expected the Grand Canyon to be a much more popular spot for Spring Break.

J62, I did give careful consider to the weather in Bryce, and after looking over the historical weather data, I thought we'd go for it. I think more concerning for us may be the change in elevation as we live at sea level. Everyone seemed to be of the opinion on the forum, if you're in the neighborhood, you've gotta make the detour for Bryce.

MichelleY, I don't think I could bare to eliminate Sedona, as I remember liking Sedona even more than the Grand Canyon on our last visit. As I sometimes describe it to people, "It's like they took the Grand Canyon and turned it inside out." As well, that is where we came up with our eldest daughter's name, so it will be especially nice to share Sedona with her. Of course we've never been to Bryce or Zion, so we may change our tune after this trip.
