Now that we have finally decided where to travel....
I need more help from all of you wonderful travelers. We decided on flying into San Diego (or LA. and driving down) and driving up the coast as far as Mendocino. I want all of your advice on things to do and places to eat. Nothing formal just relaxing and fun. We will be there the middle of June. Thanks.

We will have 10 days and 2 of those are flying in and out, so 8 days of total sightseeing. We have been to SF and driven down as far as the Bixby bridge but that was 8 yrs. ago and didn't have alot of time. Do you also have a couple of great places for a picnic on the beach? I thought about posting a question about that. Everyone has such great info that it is easy to ask a lot of questions. Thanks.

Will you be flying in to SD/LA and out of bay area? If not, that is a long RT driving and would stick to either northern or southern California.
Big Sur (accessible from LA or Bay Area) has plenty of great areas to picnic and beautiful scenery although June can be foggy. That requires you take Highway 1 which makes your driving longer.

As you can see from this thread, a lot of people have not been following your every post, so it gets very confusing when someone opens up this thread and gets a minimum of information.
Please continue with ONE thread. That way, there is CONTINUITY. One can scroll through the series of messages and see how you have arrived at your current position. The advice would be a lot more helpful than random, scattershot answers to single questions asked here and there.

I'm sorry. I am new to this and didn't know the rules. I will just keep it all together under one. We are flying into SD and out of SF. Would love any help that you can give. We just want to drive and explore the coast. We have 8 days of just driving and SF is a must 2 day trip. Any advice about how many days in each place would be great. I have heard alot of good things about Mendocino and would like to go there too. Thanks for the help.

I am hearing so much about June gloom that I am scared. It is just not possible to go out to Ca. in Oct. as everyone suggests but I don't want our whole coast trip to be fog. We were planning to go out around June 14th and was wondering if the 1st of July would be any better? Thanks.

The foggy time of the year along the coast is from June through the end of August. The fog is mainly a problem from Monterey north to SF. Therefore, if fog is a concern I would concentrate your trip on southern California(San Diego, LA, and Santa Barbara)

I'm a CA native, living now in Marin County. There will likely be fog, but it should burn off by late morning or so. Definitely not something to plan your trip around. Also, there are so many microclimates in CA and the SF Bay Area that the weather can change dramatically within a few miles.
BTW, we camped in the Golden Gate Nat'l Rec Area several times last June, July and August, and it was mostly crystal clear, no fog at all, so you just never know. I will say that the fog coming over the Golden Gate Bridge and the mountains is a very beautiful and dramatic sight. Our out of town visitors gasp when they see it.

As a San Francisco native from my experience in the summer months it is not uncommon for the fog to stick around for most, if not all day. Often times it will not burn off until around 1:00 PM only to come right back in around 3:30. Sometimes we will get lucky an it burns off before noon, but not that doesn't happen much from June to August.

Regarding the weather, we usually attend about 30 baseball games at PacBell (now SBC) park in SF during the summer months, many of them day games. I know that when we arrive at the ballpark at noon or so, most of the fog has burned off, and it usually continues to get very sunny and warm throughout the game. In fact, we have to bring hats and sunblock because our seats are shady for only part of the game.
You can also take a look at historical weather information at weather.com. In SF, the average high for June, July and August is 70, 71 and 72, with average nightime lows in the mid-fifties. Very pleasant weather, with very low humidity.

Of course I need your help. I have been reading every post I can to get info. Yall are so helpful and now I have more questions. We have worked it out to travel in Oct. instead of June and hopefully we will get clearer skies. We will be flying into SD and out of SF. We will have either 8 or 9 days of just sightseeing and 2 fly days. Any help with a rough draft of days and nights in the 'must see' places would be greatly appreciated. We really want to consentrate on the coast. In SD we don't want to do the Zoo or SW and I want to travel as far up as Mendocino. Any advice, I would welcome. Thanks.
