Trip Report Northern New Mexico RESTAURANT Trip Report - PART DOS

Jump to last reply

Here's the info on the rest of our restaurant adventures during our month in Taos:

RANCHOS DE TAOS - Two great spots!
Trading Post Cafe
www.tradingpostcafe.com
We love this place! Return visitors. Open kitchen --- great aromas as you enter! Varied and delicious menu -- toward the Italian. Friendly service. We always ENJOY ourselves and get a GREAT MEAL here. Yeah!

Ranchos Plaza Grill
Stumbled onto this place when too tired to go on further North into town. On Ranchos plaza across from church. Casual, family-owned, New Mexican food, full of locals. Delicious! Best tamales my husband had the entire trip. :)

TAOS
Taos Pizza Outback (3 times)
easy, casual spot w/picnic tables outside on gravel driveway. Graffiti, old gas station pumps and trees add to the vibe. Pizza! Good salads, too. Service is at a leisurely pace.

Orlando's (twice)
We fell in love w/this place. Fantastic New Mexican cuisine. Awesome outside patio covered with colorful umbrellas and surrounded by trees. The food is fantastic and the service is great, too. I read some not so nice reviews of this place, but I swear we were greeted, seated and served in a very friendly manner! It always makes for a nicer evening when everyone in the family enjoys their experience, and we had that going for us. My recommendation: Tres Colores!

Graham's Grill

Sat out on the patio (OK, we like to eat outside!) on the 4th of July for dinner. Gracious owner/host seated us (after he seated Rumsfeld) and again everyone enjoyed what they ordered, and the wine list was nicely priced as well. Great location right off plaza.

Love Apple
New spot in old adobe chapel. We had the table 'up' where the pulpit used to be. Cool niches, dining by candlelight. Mismatched silver/glassware/etc. Great effect. As we arrived the chef was harvesting items from their garden out back. Locally sourced food. Patio out front is charming although right on road. Menu is eclectic with some interesting combos. Lamb burger w/feta & red onion was great. Everyone enjoyed their food; they make their own very cool sodas (i.e., mint creme). Portions are not generous.

Old Blinking Light (OBL) (North of town on Ski Valley Road) (also twice)

A return visit from another trip; the place looked 'fresher', lavender paint against the dark vigas, expanded wine shop, good variety in menu and the kids had a lot to choose from. Great outdoor patio w/fireplace & torches. Good mix of New Mexican and standard American fare.

Pizanos (Ski Valley Road next to KTAOS)
Another pizza place. Cool setting, but service was slower than Pizza Outback. Decent pizza! Just don't be in a rush.

Joseph's Table (fine dining on plaza in La Fonda hotel)
www.josephstable.com
Love this place. Great wait staff. Interesting menu. Great flavors, high design "plating". Interior is well done. Old adobe features w/fresh fabrics & wall stenciling in saturated hues. Everything we ordered was full of flavor and prepared beautifully. Request a 'private sunken booth w/curtain' if you're looking for privacy. Cool bar to sit at for a drink, too.

TAOS SKI VALLEY
The Bavarian
www.thebavarian.net
Above TSV @ about 10,000 feet, this restaurant is definitely a 'must do' in the winter months. In the summer, it's great to sit out on the deck and face the mountains & enjoy a (big, Bavarian) beer and a pretzel. Great spot for lunch after the hike to Williams Lake. Menu is somewhat limited but delicious and they do have options for children. Must admit, dinner is best experienced inside, with your back to the warm oven tiles as the snow falls outside. (Shuttle from ski valley in winter.)

Tim's Stray Dog Cantina
www.strraydogtsv.com
Had several meals and drinks in this cozy spot at the heart of the ski valley. The green chile cheeseburger is a staple. Good luck getting it without the chile! :) Outside deck on the river. Friendly owner and staff. Friendly characters at the bar.

Sabroso!
www.sabrosotaos.com
Arroyo Seco (5 miles from intersection of main drag and 150/Ski Valley Road)
Rambling adobe with ample seating in and out and a cool bar! Mostly American/Italian influenced menu. A good time. Family friendly.

The Deck at the St Bernard
www.stbernardtaos.com
The place to lunch winter or summer! At the foot of the mountain, friendly folks grill burgers and salmon filets at this popular outdoor spot. Can't be beat for a casual meal that comes with SUN, a killer VIEW of the mountain and some awesome people watching!

Deli @ Edelweiss Spa & Lodge
www.edelweisslodgeandspa.com
Justin serves up the best breakfast burritos in the valley for breakfast and makes a mean sandwich at lunch (packed to go for your hike). Fresh food, friendly service. :)

Finally, our favorite spots for drinks:

Taos Inn, of course. Great ambiance, lots of live music as well.
www.taosinn.com

El Monte Segrado (resort east on Kit Carson Road)
www.elmontesagrado.com
The Anaconda Bar has a much more 'polished', resort-feel than anything else in town. Beautiful grounds and fantastic textures/finishes in the decor.

Joseph's Table (in La Fonda hotel on plaza) Dark, cozy, elegant vibe.

Taos Country Club (south of town, turn-off is next to Taos Drum)
www.taoscountryclub.com
AWESOME VIEWS, especially during storms. Friendly bartender & HUGE Shirley Temples for the kids!

That's about it! Awesome trip! Details soon!
