Northern Coast Hotels

Driving from SF to Portland and would like to drive no more than 4 hours each day. Thinking of stops in Mendocino (2 nights), Eureka (1 night), Gold Beach (2 nights), then on to Portland. I know the last stretch is longer than what I'd like, but should be OK.
Any reccomendations for hotels? I'm flexible with the cities, as long as stretchs not longer than around 4 hours. Any 5 star coastal hotels between SF and Portland?

I can recommend the Little River Inn just south of Mendocino. It is a very nice hotel in a spectacular location. They have a variety of room types, most of them have ocean views. I prefer staying here to actually staying in Mendocino.

You mention Gold Beach. I have stayed at Tu Tu Tun Lodge which is inland from Gold Beach on the Rogue River. It is a unique and wonderful place to stay.

I would drop one night at Gold Beach and stay a night in Lincoln City.

Little River Inn looks terrific, at least by viewing their website and Tu Tu Tun another winner for Gold Beach. Tom, do you suggest dropping a day from Gold Beach because there's not much to see there? Or is it because Lincoln City is so worth seeing?
Was hoping to avoid so many "one-nighters" which I accomplish by an extra night in Gold Beach.
Any suggestions for hotels approxximately half way between Mendcino and Gold Beach?

Where would you recommend more or less midway between Mendocino and Gold Beach for a good hotel. Was checking Eureka, but reviews on another website scared me away.
Any 5 star hotels on the coast btw. Mendocino and Gold Beach?

The Best Western in Eureka (the one on the highway, not downtown) is pretty good for its type, and for Eureka, but not a 5 star inn...

you could check out the Requa Inn just south of Crescent City- its not a 5 star for sure but an old restored inn on the river- just a short drive up to a fabulous lookout over the ocean with access to a nice hiking trail - and when I was there a few weeks ago we were entertained most of the day by whales playing and feeding in the waters below.

Had dinner at the Requa Inn in a lovely dining room overlooking the river- chef is very creative- I thought dinner was a bit spendy but it was very nice. Dining room gets rather noisy if there is a crowd.

Or there is the Wild spring Guest Habitat at Port Orford- it is not on the ocean but on a hill above. The accommodations are lovely cabins nestled in the trees - and there is a great hot tub overlooking the ocean.

I believe breakfasts are included- would have to drive into Port Orford for dinner

Thanks for all the recommendations.
Here's the tentative plan:
SF- 3 nights
Mendocino - 2 nights at Little River Inn
Eureka - 1 night at Best Western
Gold Beach - Tu Tu Tun 2 nights
Portland - 2 nights

The drive from Gold Beach to Portland is about 6 hours, according to online maps and would prefer shorter drive. Are there any seaside hotels about an hour north of Gold Beach (in which case I'd eliminate Gold Beach altogether)and thereby shorten the last leg of the trip.
Thank you again.

How about the Red Lion in Coos Bay? http://redlion.rdln.com/HotelLocator...aspx?metaID=21
It is close to the Bay but not the ocean. Continue north on 101 to Reedsport and then take 38 to get back to I-5.
About 4 miles east of Reedsport, you will pass the Dean Creek Elk viewing area. I saw over 40 elk the last time I was there.

"Are there any seaside hotels about an hour north of Gold Beach..."

It might be too far north for your purposes, but the town of Yachats is nice area. The Overleaf Lodge is a very nice property that is oceanfront.

First, the caveat. We have traveled the far North Coast of California many times and the Oregon Coast once, but neither for several years. That said, the CA coast north of Mendocino, while lovely, felt economically depressed to me even before 2008. The area is more about what you're seeing than where you're staying. Over the years we've stayed in Eureka, Arcata, Ferndale, and Orick and had lunch in Trinidad. Of those stops, I thought little Trinidad was the most picturesque and would consider overnighting there rather than Eureka. On the Oregon Coast, I loved Bandon with its sea stacks.

I personally wouldn't stay in Eureka. Trinidad or Ferndale would be nicer/more scenic.

Tu Tu Tun Lodge is in the most scenic part of the Oregon coast but the lodge is not located on the ocean! When we stayed there, we were not as thrilled as others seem to be.

On the other hand, Stephanie Inn (Cannon Beach) never fails to please and Overleaf Lodge (Yachats) is a delight if you can get a room with ocean balcony.

Thanks again, and after reconsidering, made reservation in Arcata (instead of of Eureka)at Hampton Inn. I have low expectations for the hotel itself, but only 1 night, and judging from reviews, it should be clean and comfortable.
Although Cannon Beach and Yachats appear lovely, they seem to be too long of a drive from Arcata.
So, any recs for beachside hotel, about 3 to 4 hours north of Arcata, (or approximately halfway between Arcata and Portland, the final stop on this trip)?

Is Newport too far north? Affordable oceanfront hotels are not common on the Oregon coast. http://www.elizabethstreetinn.com/
Plan to see the Oregon Coast Aquarium if you go that far north before cutting over to I-5.
