Husband and I are going to visit his family in the Twin Cities this June. Husband wants to take me up to the North Shore, he wants to show me some areas that he went to as a kid. Do you know of any small inns or B&B's that are on the water in maybe Two Harbors or Silver Bay (did I get that right?). We went to go up past Duluth but maybe not as quite as far as Grand Portage.
Husband doesn't know many places because they always camped there and we'll be staying in a inn or B&B instead.

I stayed at Blue Fin resort last summer. It is very nice and the location is excellent. I highly recommend the Angry Trout for a meal should you get as far north as Grand Marais.

Check out the Stone Hearth Inn - I stayed there once for a few days in the carriage house rooms and loved it. Great location and very private.

The lighthouse at Two Harbors is a very nifty B&B. Check it out at 222.lighthousebb.org . Three rooms only, and someone comes in in the morning to cook the breakfast.

We prefer driving beyond Two Harbors and like the Lutsen area better, or continue further up to Grand Marais.

And cmcfong, could not be more right, if you do make it to Grand Marais, The Antry Trout Cafe is an absolute must!

...If you do indeed not want to drive further up the shore as we always do, I found this new lodging that might appeal to you, it is near Two Harbors.

We have always wanted to stay further up the shore as to be closer to the rivers, falls, and Grand Marais. But these accommodations might be nice if we had a limited amount of time:

Another great restaurant in that area is the Scenic Cafe. Heading out of Duluth on the Scenic highway it will be on your right. WOW. Great food. I could have stayed a week. It would be easy to dine there if you stay in the Two Harbors area.

I endorse the Angry Trout wholeheartedly. But another restaurant that I havn't heard on this thread yet is Betty's Pie in Two Harbors. Betty still makes the pies there - over 300 of them every day. People come from all over the world. It is indeed worth a stop if just for a piece of pie.

We stayed at http://www.travelersrest.com/ (Nelson's Travelers Rest) while doing a north shore trip. It wasn't right on the water - but could walk to the beach from there. The cabins were nice - nothing extremely fancy - but reasonably priced, very clean, well stocked and the people very friendly. We plan to stay there again.
