starrs, thanks for the link, I think we were at CdC at the same time and the report brought back some nice memories.
Here's Toucan2's trip report that includes South Rim on Christmas Day and Canyon de Chelly.

The first time I visited the South Rim was in winter too and was amazed at the difference between winter and summer visits when I returned in summer. The South Rim is gorgeous - no doubt - but I love the atmosphere of the much quieter North Rim in summer.
emalloy, I did a search for your trip report but didn't find it. Add it in here.
I'm trying to help Melissa make a decision between the two rims for a multi-generational trip next summer.
starrs,
I didn't have a tr for that trip, but did respond to Melissa re her GC trip, probably longer than I should have. I really prefer south rim for first timers, but tend to visit at less crowded times in any case.
BTW we had a 4wd in Canyon de Chelley and the Navajo woman we met at the VC drove it into the park for us and gave us a great tour. Totally better than the "shake and Bake".
We stayed at the Best Western in Chinle and the front desk folk arranged a private tour with a Navajo guide that picked us up at the hotel. We LOVED being in our own (enclosed) jeep rather than being in the "shake and bake" too.
