We will be in Kansas City this weekend at Worlds of Fun/Oceans of Fun (kids' choice, of course!) Are there any good BBQ places in this area north of Kansas City? Or any other restaurants that we should consider in this area?

My favorite restauran fairly close to there is Stroud's They serve family style dinners in lovely old mansion. The oldest portions of the building were built in 1827.
The food is good, the servings very generous, and reasonably priced. They are most known for fried chicken. The pork chops and catfish are also quite popular.

The only BBQ I have tried in that neighborhood is the Arthur Bryants in the Ameristar casino. The BBQ is good, though this location lacks the ambiance of the original restaurant.
Lots of choices if you decide to drive farther.

Thank you, Keith. Your answer was just what I hoped for. I have the addresses and directions to both Stroud's and Arthur Bryant's in the Ameristar Casino, but we may take your advice and travel farther, depending on everyone's mood! Anyone: any other suggestions?
Marsha,
Personally, I wouldn't go to any Bryant's other than the original location.
I might recommend Smokin' Guns BBQ at 1218 Swift Ave. Phone is (816) 221-2535.
Stroud's is certainly a Northland favorite. If you have the time and can navigate the highway work, I'd probably suggest going a little farther though and trying out Fiorella's, the original Bryant's, or Gates (which has locations close to both Fiorella's and Bryant's).
Have fun!
Thanks again, Midwestcoup and Keith. We ate at Stroud's North, Stephenson's Apple Farm Restaurant and a Gates. All three were excellent! My favorite was Stroud's North - the pan-fried chicken is incredible. The building was very interesting - a former stagecoach stop from the early 1800's.
We were just in KC and ate at Stroud's, the other location on 85th, and it was fantastic as usual. Don't know if you'd get to a Royals game, but we thought it was great they had a Gates bbq in the ball park and also sold Boulevard beer.
On the topic of KC restaurants, I had argued on these boards in the past year about how great the Mexican food was at Ponak's. Went there for lunch this trip, and don't know why exactly, but it was eh, not great at all. So, in the past year, I've had one good, one so-so experience. Maybe I need to stand corrected?
