I will be traveling to Norfolk next week for 5 days. Will go from Norfolk north for two days to see Jamestown and other Historic areas and then back to Norfolk. Please recommend a beautiful place to stay somewhere in between Norfolk and the airport. Preferably a suite type hotel with a seperate bedroom area..no bed and breakfast.
How are the tunnels?? Thank you!

I can't help you with the hotels but I can tell you that if you avoid the peak travel times you should avoid the traffic. Don't assume that the traffic travels in one direction for commuters. It is usually backed up both ways. You can call 511 to get reports on the tunnel traffic before you head out. If you are staying near the airport it won't help to go the alternate route over the Monitor-Merrimac because it will be too far out of your way.

There really isn't any place that I would recommend in between downtown Norfolk and the airport. In my opinion, the area between the two is just not that great. I would stay in Downtown Norfolk. The Hampton Bridge Tunnel over to Jamestown can be brutal during rush hour or if there has been an accident. Every day, it is not unusual to hear of a 3-5 mile backup at rush hour. Otherwise it's not bad at all. Unfortunately, there is no way to judge, it's just luck. The easier way actually would be to go through the downtown tunnel towards Portsmouth (I264) and get on the Monitor Merimack Bridge/Tunnel (I664) (not sure if I spelled that right). It's rare that I've seen this as bad as the Hampton Tunnel. You don't have to go through a tunnel to go from a hotel in downtown Norfolk to the airport. Hope this makes sense and helps.

There is a lovely B&B in downtown Norfolk in the historic district called Freemason Inn Bed and Breakfast. Even though we only live 20 minutes away, we have taken weekend breaks and stayed at this charming inn.
