NOLA - Safe for walking?

What are some opinions of 2 single women walking during the day on Ramart St? I saw a Google map pictures and it looked a little rough; however, I don't want to 'judge a book by its cover'. Thank you!

During the day I wouldn't hesitate to walk by myself or with another woman.

As I discovered, the hard way, a woman walking the streets of New Orleans isn't always a woman.

First, my error. ..I meant Rampart St. In reference to 'single' I am referring to no kids or men with us. With all the ugliness around our country, I don't want to put myself in harms way by walking through an unknown neighborhood that has a shady reputation. (We're from the San Francisco area; yeah, we're familiar with the different types of dress.) Thanks so much!

Here's the answer: it depends. If you're talking about the major thoroughfare Rampart that constitutes the northern border of the French Quarter, you shouldn't really have issues. If you're talking about the smaller street that goes into the Marigny and Bywater areas, those may be dicier.

Be alert - there are a LOT of areas in NOLA that are a bit iffy. That said, here's the full list of issues I've had with safety in numerous trips there: ________.

Well a work colleague of mine turned the wrong way out of his hotel at about 7 pm - but still light onto Rampart. Within 2 blocks he was held up by 2 youths with a gun who took his watch and wallet and threatened to shoot him until a cop car turned the corner and they ran.

The cops told him he didn't belong there and to get back into the Quarter to a place with a lot more people.
