NO - Wyndham hotel - area safety

Hi, my question is about the safety of the area - we'll be taking the streetcar a lot, I think, and this hotel is conveniently only one block away, it's on Common St @ Dauphine, the "other" side of Canal St from French Quarter?

It will be our first time in NO, and I'm looking for more or less budget place.

Is that the Wyndham Gardens on Commons, closer to Baronne than to Dauphine? Anyway, that whole area is safe enough, not a slum or anything, but not attractive either. Sure there are some "street people", and drinking is a pasttime of many of them, but I never saw anything really worrying in my last two visits. It's just city streets with offices above and some shops and restaurants at ground level, nothing quaint - the quaint is on the other side of Canal Street.
Take a look on Google maps and switch to street view.

Baronne, not Dauphine - didn't realize it's a different name on the other side of Canal St.

Well if it is that far in the future, and since it's neither during the French Quarter Jazz Fest nor during the big Heritage+Jazz festival (when rates shoot up!!!), you should be able to get decent rates in a much nicer location. I realize that you wish to be close to the street cars, but figure out which line and why, then see if you can find a location where you would have gone by street car, and stay there. Maybe out towards the Zoo along St. Charles - there are lovely stretches along there. Or up near City Park - the street car goes to the museum park entrance at City Park and Carrollton and it's beautiful around there, and it's also close to the French Quarter if you take the bus down Esplanade from there.

Esplanade between N. Rampart and N. Peters has lodgings in all types of grand old houses, with lots of character, and if music is your thing, it's all around you.

Then you can take the street car along the river to get back to Canal if you need to.

BTW - the abbreviation for the Big Easy that they use themselves down there is NOLA.

Since you have plenty of time, try to get a DVD or two, some guide books at your library, and use the Street View function on Google extensively, so that you see what's nice and what's not.

Dayenu here is where we stayed when we visited NOLA this time last year. Hershey recommended it initially.

http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Rev...Louisiana.html

It is ranked highly on Trip Advisor and and 5 minutes walk to the French Quarter. We walked to the St Charles streetcar stopped again too about five minutes.

Free breakfast and free WiFi too and a reasonable price. Well we thought so anyway.

It's a good location. Not a beautiful area, but on the street car line and quite easy to walk into the French Quarter. There's an IHOP nearby for breakfast and a big CVS if you need anything. Get a 3 day pass for the street car to ride anywhere. You are close to the St Charles line to go into the Garden District, too.
