No accomodation in Hana...should we forget about it?
My husband & I are leaving this Sunday for Hawaii to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. We've booked 5 nights in South Maui then planning on heading to Hana (something romantic) for 2 nights (Aug 1&2), then leaving for Big Island on August 3rd. I've practically enquired at every single cottage/B&B/hotel and NO availability OR we have to buy groceries and cook as there don't seem to be many restaurant options. And we don't mind buying groceries and cooking if we were finding a nice cottage for two nights, but were not. And we really don't want to do the drive there and back in one day plus we only have the condo in South Maui for 5 nights and cant change it to 6 or 7 nights - in any event we don't want to stay there for longer.
My question to the community is: Should I continue to look at going to Hana and book one night at one hotel and one night at another OR go somewhere else that is enroute and has some restaurants and is quaint? If so, where? Most importantly...where to stay that's available Aug 1 & 2 with a budget between $150-$200/night.

I can tell by your wording that you might be a bit wound up...
The spirit of Hana is along the road... you don't have to stay there to enjoy it... grab whatever you can as a backup and see if you can catch a cancellation later... Hang loose...

I have been on the Road to Hana at least 4 times. I've never stayed overnight and honestly probably wouldn't want to. Agree it could be a romantic evening for a couple, very quiet.
At this late notice, it might be hard to find something in your price range. Looks like there is a house with rooms available in Paia which is a cute little town but for me not worth staying for two. I saw the place on Expedia but can't find their direct website. The name is Kaihole Hale.
If it was me, I'd stay somewhere else and just do the Road to Hana for the day. Since you are staying in South Maui for the 5 days, spend the other two days in the Kaanapali area if you can find something to book. Personally I'd just stay in South Maui, but that's me.

It sounds like I should look into staying the whole time in South Maui or simply go with the flo and find something last minute. I guess I had a concern it was too long a drive for one day and back. we really like to just chill or do some activity like biking...in other words, shopping and/or site seeing for the sake of saying we've been isn't our thing. We tried doing this with the Grand Canyon (there and back drive from Scottsdale) and hated.
Okay garyt22, sounds like I need to get to Hawaii fast so I can unwind aka hang loose!!!
thanks all.

It is a long day because you are driving slowly and making lots of stops. Get a guide book or use a GPS app for Road to Hanna. I used the Maui Revealed book and it was great. Shows you by mile markers where to stop and what to see. Don't miss the Black Sand Beach. As far as shopping, there is not much along the road except some small stands. We would usually eat lunch when we got to Hanna. Then you can go past Hanna to see other sights.
Don't usually have time to do all the stops but a little research will tell you which ones not to miss.
As far as playing it by ear, I wouldn't attempt that on Maui. I suppose you could find someplace to stay but it would most likely be over your budget or not where you want to be. That's just my experience and I've been to Maui at least 10 times.
Have fun. I really like the Road to Hanna and I hope you do too. It's beautiful scenery.
