Nightine Transport! Best Hotel?
We are 2 adults who will be landing at Newark at 9:50pm. We will need night-time transportation on arrival, and would like recommendations for a hotel in an area with good proximity to Manhattan. We plan to be active, staying 3 nights before the cruise and one night after. We would also like to ride the Staten Island Ferry at least once.
After reading many posts on this forum I am not sold on staying in Newark. Any suggestions on which hotel to chose and how best to get to it at after 10pm will be appreciated.

Arriving that late you may want to stay near the airport and go into the city the next day on the Flyaway train.

Which port? There are three in the NYC area. No matter which, I would stay in Manhattan. You can get the train from the airport. The Airtrain to the NJ Transit Newark Airport Station and then a train to New York Penn Station (not Newark Penn Station). No sense in staying near the airport. If you aren't comfortable doing the train then get a cab or car service. 9:50pm is not late in the NYC metropolitan area.

Agree that 9:50 is not late. the transit runs all night but definitely a regular schedule before midnight.
I would definitely stay in Manhattan to be close to the sights and easy transit - rather than wasting time and money trekking in and out of the city every day.
But to help we need some more info:
Which of the 3 ports in New York Metro does you ship sail out of?
For a hotel, how many people are you and what bed configuration do you need? Also what is your specific nightly budget in $?
What transit to take really depends on what hotel you pick and how you value convenience over cost. How much luggage will you have? Are you able willing to deal with it yourself on escalators and/or stairs?

For your convenience, get a hotel near Penn Station, where the train from EWR airport will bring you into Manhattan. Look at the Affinia Manhattan or any number of cheaper hotels in the Penn Station/Herald Square area. There's also a really nice Hyatt Place closer to 8th Avenue and Macy's. I also like the Hotel Metro.
Not sure of your budget, so it's impossible to make a real recommendation without that. But Penn Station hotels are very convenient for transit and are also close to the cruise piers in Manhattan.
It's not late, so take the train. Airtrain to NJ Transit, directly into Manhattan. You'll be at your hotel by 11:30 if you don't have to wait a long time for your luggage.

Our Cruise departs from Cape Liberty NJ.
Thank you so much Tom, SuzieQ, NY, and Doug. That is exactly the kind of advice I needed.
How hard would it be to get from Penn station to Cape Liberty on the day of the cruise?
We will be one couple the first night, then joined by a second couple, each couple needing their own room. We travel vith very little luggage and, if needed, we can handle it ourselves walking for a couple of blocks.
Staying around Penn Station sounds a lot more interesting to me than staying in Newark!

• By Train
Take the PATH train from Manhattan to Jersey City or Hoboken. Outside the PATH Station, take the NJ Hudson-Bergen Light Rail train to Bayonne. Get off at the 34th Street Station in Bayonne. You are now directly across Route 440 from The Peninsula at Bayonne Harbor, which includes the Cape Liberty Cruise Port. Call one of the three Bayonne cab companies to drive you to the cruise port, which is about two miles east of the Light Rail line.
• By Bus
From the Port Authority Bus Terminal, take the 99S bus to Bayonne. The 99S bus travels along Kennedy Boulevard into Bayonne and stops on request every three blocks. When you reach 33rd Street and Kennedy Boulevard in Bayonne, you will be at the closest point on the bus route to the cruise port. Call one of the three Bayonne cab companies to drive you to the cruise port, which is about three miles east of Kennedy Boulevard.
