We stayed at the Embassy Suites on the river there last August. It was fine, the room a bit worn in places, and the bathroom and mini bar area were dated, but it was clean. Outside of the room the hotel looked to be in better condition. Location was excellent and service even better. We were only there for one night, but I would not hesitate to stay there again. That was our only time there, so I don't know about other hotels. Hopefully someone else can chime in.
Suites at 800 Locust would probably be the nicest hotel in downtown Des Moines.
