nice resort in Arizona or Southern California
Am trying to plan a 5 night 6 day trip for 60 th birthday...if I don't go to Zion and Bryce was thinking of going to a nice resort instead. Would love to have suggestions. I don't care about golf or spa. thanks

Jokaca--I gave my husband a week at Canyon Ranch in Tucson AZ for his 60th birthday. That package included a pricey Executive Health package. Only "spa" service he booked the entire time was a well-deserved massage.
My gift saved his life.
Even though he is a lifelong athlete with not one excess pound with an admirable healthy diet, the Ranch medical team found very low bone density in his hip, borderline diabetic blood results,and surprisingly high cholesterol.
He wasn't "suffering" in the least with this medical package. In between being tested and counseled,he got to eat all the healthy food he loves (very tasty) and could exercise his butt off inside their facilities and outside with gorgeous views hiking and biking. He was in heaven.
He considers this as the best trip idea I ever had. We now go back every year for a week so he can get a quickie check-up and a total chill-out.

First of all what time of year are you going? That will make a lot of difference in the location. If you don't care about golf or spas, what do you like to do? Do you want someplace very quiet where you stay at the resort the whole time or someplace where you can also do other activities? Do you like the mountains, the beaches or the desert? A little more info would be helpful.
Canyon Ranch is very nice but also very expensive.

Want to add again that CR IS expensive, but for what you get, NOT outrageous at all. We go between June 1 and September 30 when rates are much lower. We don't do spa services, although I have to tell you I'm happy at the end of the day reading my Kindle (in plastic bags)in one of the women's hot tubs.
While there, we probably exercise at the very least 5 hours a day--and all of us have favorite routines. More specifically, my daughters take advantage of the 3+ dance classes offered per day and particularly enjoy boxing classes. They can still take advantage of the hiking options, which range from short to all-day ventures. We all tend to cycle outside early--often up to the top of the Sabino Canyon-- for at least one hour. I always do around 2 outside water classes and sometimes sneak in an inside one. Husband does a Men's Stretch that he loves since he is the most inflexible human on earth; I am happy with doing Yoga. My husband and I take in two very interesting medical talks/clinics per day. Given our exercise schedule, we are eating three lovely meals plus two take-out snacks. And we report early for Bingo!.
That's all included. Desert sunrises and desert sunsets--also free.
This place is not full of people looking to be "seen". Cell phones are verboten in the dining room,classes, etc. It's full of all sorts of people from all walks of life who are generally interested in getting physically and/or mentally restored. Very low key. Example: Last fall, I shared morning walks with one woman who wore beat-up warm-ups, a rather soiled baseball cap, and rather interesting T-shirts. Lovely person. We talked about books every day and found we shared some strange favorites. After she went home, found out from another guest the woman was a big mover and shaker in the business world. Would never have known--that thing is not part of being there.

AlessandraZoe's post is a perfect example of why it's important to state your budget in $$ rather than just saying "budget" or "mid-range" or "upscale". AZ obviously very enthusiastically thinks Canyon Ranch is "not that expensive for what you get". At $4600 per person for 7 nights in summer, I would beg to differ My friend spent a blissful week at Rancho La Puerta a few weeks ago for about $3500 all-in, in a single room. I'm just saying I think it's darned expensive (of course, I'd much rather spend that $10,000 on a trip to Paris, but that's just me).

Sedona would be a great option. Also helpful would be a ballpark figure on what you want to spend. I can recommend some of the resorts here in So. Ca like the Montage or the St. Regis but they can be very pricey. Less money in the off-season but then you probably wouldn't have great beach weather.
If you want to relax at a quiet, smaller resort, the Royal Palms in Phoenix would be a good choice. Again, expensive except in the off-season. So I think knowing your budget would help us give you the best recommendations.
