Newport RI Trip Report

Jump to last reply

Just back from 4 nights in Newport, RI. Highlights are:

Where we stayed: Francis Malbone House. Overall a wonderful experience. Stayed in room C8, in the new section, called Newport, room 8. Wonderful king size bed, plenty of space overall. Breakfast and afternoon treats were amazing, each day was better then the day before. Very fresh and a wonderful selection. All hotel staff were great. Will, Anne Marie and Darryl went out of their way to make us feel like we were their only guests.

Where we ate:
White Horse Tavern, worth every penny. Great food and service.
22 Bowens: a bad choice. Anne Marie tried to steer us away from there due to previous guests bad comments, we went anyway. We should have listened. Both of our meals were below par, service was so bad I wrote a comment card on the horrible waiter. The table next to us got up and left in the middle of their dinner due to their dissatisfaction with the food and the same waiter we had. Stay away, there are too many other places to go.
The West Deck: Service and food were outstanding.
Café Zelda: Service and food were outstanding.

What we did:
Four Mansions in this order: The Elms, Marble House, Rosecliff, Breakers. You can skip Rosecliff, and definitely do the Breakers last. One day of tennis at the Newport Casino, and the Tennis Hall of Fame. A men’s professional tournament was being played at this time and this was one of the reasons for the timing of the trip. Two thirds of the Cliff Walk, beautiful views and good exercise as well.

Overall a very nice trip.
