I will be going to Newport this weekend and am looking for suggestions on things to do. Any suggestions on which mansions to explore? Also, how is the cliff walk?

Breakers, Marble House, the Elms are 3 of the 5 we visited as a pkg. They are all large; some of the smaller ones are ingteresting, too. Cliff walk, at least part of it, is a must. Jusat browsiong Thames street and the wharf area for restaurants and shops is fun.
If you have car, drive the circle of Ocean Drive along the sea.
Newport is a gorgeous place. If you can only do one mansion make it the Breakers...I suggest the cliff walk anywhere between first beach and carey beach. Take a picnic to Brenton Point on Ocean Drive and watch the kite flying clubs on one side, the waves on the other. You cannot leave Newport without having a Del's frozen lemonade which you can get from the truck at Brenton Point or downtown by the wave statue off America's Cup Ave and Thames St. Spend the evening downtown and don't miss eating lunch or dinner at the Black Pearl on the wharf (Bannisters, I belive)...it is a Newport institution. The Pelham is a great bar but the summer crowd is a bit much sometimes...it is very busy on summer weekends but who cares when it is that beautiful! Have a great time.
We just visited Newport the week of July 4th . We saw three mansions--the Breakers, Rosecliff and Marble House--you can get a package deal for any 3. The best of the three for us were the Breakers and Marble House. Go early to avoid the crowds, you'll get good parking and will be glad you did later in the afternoon. You will find shopping/dining options on Thames St./America's Cup Ave. Take a drive out to the Fort (get a map from your hotel) and Castle Hill Inn along Ocean Ave. or if you can, take a bike ride out along Ocean Drive. We parked in one of the lots near Castle Hill and biked back into town to the mansions and return. Earlier the same day, we parked at Easton Beach, did the entire Cliff Walk and ran back to the beach. Doing the entire cliff walk is adventurous as it gets very rocky after 2 to 2 1/2 miles in. If you perservere, you 'can' do the entire thing and then walk along Thames St. back, but if you do roundtrip, it will be close to 7 miles. We stayed at the Hyatt on Goat Island. It's a good place for an evening stroll or for a drink at their outdoor cabana-type bar where you can watch the sunset. There are also benches situated along the water there if you just want to go over and relax.
