Newport, Rhode island

First week in June1997...looking for a First Class modern Hotel close to harbor, shopping and main Street downtown Newport. No bed and breakfast...Is there such a place in Newport...need three deluxe rooms...also restaurant choices. Thank you very much!

Each of these hotels meet ALL of your criteria:

Newport Harbor Hotel & Marina 1-800-955-2558
Newport Marriott 1-800-228-9290 (not your standard Marriott, but very, very classy)

Be sure to tour a few of the mansions and stroll the Cliff Walk while you're there. Best restaurant is the White Horse Tavern.

Outstanding spot for lunch or dinner is the Black Pearl. Has award-winning clam chowder and is right on the wharf. Also recommed Christie's (have eaten there a number of times), but service can be mediocre at times. Denise

We stayed at the Doubletree on Goats Island and
loved it.Walking distance to all the action yet away from the noise. The hotel runs a very efficient shuttle if you don't like to walk. Our favorite restaurant was something called Scales N Tailes(I think?)Anyway-the best grilled lobster I have ever had.

I used to live near the mansions, so I know the area very well. I would recommend the Newport Marriott. It's very nice (great pool). For restaurant choices, there are many in the area. Everything is walking distance in downtown. Stop by Thackaberry's for a drink (on the end of Thames Street) and maybe the Newport Yacht Club
