Newport or Laguna Beach, CA, hotel before a morning meeting in Irvine?

I'm flying from Nashville to LA, then renting a car for some business appointments. The first day I'll have most of the afternoon and the evening to drive south and settle in, with a 9:00 am appt. the next day in Irvine. My last trip I stayed in Dana Point - great! But, think I want to be closer to Irvine this time. Any suggestions re: which area to stay in, and also specific hotels recommended? Hope to spend no more than 150 to 180 per nite. Thanks in advance - you guys never steer me wrong!

Last two meetings in Irvine I stood at the Hilton. There is one not far from John Wayne airport Orange County (it gets the job done, nothing special):

And one on the PCH in Newport Beach (much nicer):

I used Priceline for both and got in for under $100. Between the two, I recommend Newport Beach.

Laguna Beach might be a good destination after the meeting but personally I wouldn't want to chance a morning commute. Just me, and I used to live very close to Newport Beach.

When is your trip? Summer rates can be high in Laguna but lower in other seasons. There are a few inns near the beach that are in that range that are decent. I live here and don't think the commute to Irvine in the am would be bad. Maybe 20 mins...30 max with traffic that time. Check on best western las brisas....or the smaller motor inns like The Tides or Seaside Inn.

I would stay in Newport Beach for meetings in Irvine. You just don't know how the traffic will be for the trip from Laguna.

Thanks to each of you for providing input. My trip will be in two weeks! The Hilton looks great (and I like Hiltons as a rule) but this one (Huntington Beach) may be over my budget. I realize I should consider Priceline - I would be a first timer. I'll take a look a the Best Western, too.

The insight regarding the commute is helpful as well. I could just stay overnight in Irvine .... but hate to pass up the opportunity for the beach exposure.

SOunds like Newport may be an easier drive to Irvine... I'll give that further study. Thanks again for the assistance!

Newport is definitely an easier drive. You have several roads that lead you right into Irvine. From Laguna most traffic goes through the Pass which can get backed up. A lot of people love the Marriott at Pelican hill but its pricey. There's a Marriott very close to the border of Newport and Irvine overlooking the Backbay (nature preserve). Lot of dining options nearby. Fashion Island is another good spot, there's a Marriott and another Island Hotel there as well. Then you can park and walk to any number of fine restaurants. There's a HEI thats right on PCH in Newport...not a particularly exciting location or anything. Next time fly to SNA and enjoy one of America's best airports!

Be mindful that many hotels that list "newport" as the location are not by the beach - newport buts up to Irvine so some feel more like Irvine.

Radisson Newport Beach is right next to the airport for example. What is the Marriott at Pelican Hill? - Do you mean Marriott Newport Coast?

The commute *is horrible at times in Laguna -

Hyatt Regency Newport comes up a lot with priceline. We have stayed there a few times - again, you are not on the beach but walking distance to Balboa Island and Fashion Island. I am not sure in two weeks if you are going to score a room on that budget super close to the beach?
