My wife, myself and our 4 month old are planning a long week end in Newpoert, RI. I am thinking of staying at the Hyatt on Goat Island. Anyone have any opinions on this hotel or an alternative suggestion? Also how is the spa at the Hyatt? Thanks for your help !

If you have low expectations and get a good rate, the Hyatt is fine. The location is convenient. If you're expecting a 'nice' hotel with high quality rooms and bathrooms, look elsewhere. There are no truly nice chain hotels in Newport. That's one reason the B&B's flourish (or vice versa). The better B&B's are really expensive, but some are well done.
We've stayed at the Marriott with our young son and found it to be a good option. The central location makes it an easy to just park the car when you arrive and walk where you want to go.
They have a nice indoor pool which is a plus if the weather isn't perfect. If price isn't a concern, I suggest you think about a room on the concierge floor as it has breakfast and afternoon snacks. Again, if price isn't an issue, it might be worth thinking about a suite. When traveling with our two kids, having the ability to let them sleep in their own room gives us some space, and them the ability to have some quiet.
Not sure you're comfortable doing this, but we used their babysitting service so that we could enjoy a nice dinner on Saturday night. I don't remember it being terribly expensive and the person they sent was a responsible adult they recommended.
BTW, a recall a thread a few months back regarding these same hotels. I might suggest a search as I recall there were several people who responded. Good luck.
If price isn't an issue I'd stay at Castle Hill in a heartbeat. It is an old shingle-style "estate" away from the downtown area, but set high on a bluff overlooking the bay. The setting is gorgeous. They have some cottages too, right on the bluff, which would be wonderful and private for a family.
If you don't stay there, make it a point to go out for lunch one day...you can eat on the patio looking down the long slope to cliffs and the passage from the bay to the ocean. We've watched the 12 meters come out for the solo circumnavigation from that point...what an awesome sight! It's not unusual to see at least one pass on any given day--we've been a few times and each time have seen one.
We've stayed at the Hyatt--it's extremely convenient. It gets some great reviews, but it also gets some that are just so-so and we fall into the latter group. It originally was not a Hyatt and still needs work to bring it up to par IMHO. It wasn't bad, but neither was it what I've come to expect from Hyatt's. Our last stay was 2 years ago. It was also during the boat show when every room was in use, and it's entirely possible that they've completed a renovation in the interim.
