New Yorkers,,,Yea!!
I shared in the lounge in Dec about 2 instances where people did a kindness towards me. I also shared the stories to my email contacts, so my son just sent me his story.
He lives in Inwood, upper Manhattan around 205th st. and Broadway. As he was digging his car out a city plow honks at him from across the street. They turn around and plow as close to his car as they could to help him out, then a man with a shovel helps him for a half hour to finish up the job. Son wanted to know where he lived so he could drop off a bottle of wine but the stranger declined and just hurried off to move his car where the meter was running out.
I truly don't know where the impression of cold, uncaring New Yorkers comes from. I am not that old, but whenever I visit son and take subway downtown, I am always offered a seat. Anyway, for those of you planning to visit, don't be afraid, New Yorkers are truly nice folks.

I think the impression comes from a lot of people who are frightened of cities and people who are not exactly like them.
Anyone who ever had that image of NYC only had to look at what we did during a umber of disasters - from 9/11 to Superstorm Sandy - to see everyone contributing and going the extra mike to help each other out.

Native NY'er here. I was once on the coat line at MoMA and when the fellow behind me jostled me a third time, I turned and said something. He told me he was from out of town and was conducting a pre-emptive strike. I told him that was rude wherever he was from.
My niece lived in a LA for a while and these were her impressions. In LA everyone says hello, but no one helps you when you fall down. In NY, no one says hello, but everyone runs over to help when you fall down.
NY'ers have there own unwritten rules and body language. There are 17 million in the metro area, and if we did not know how to get along we would have a much higher murder rate.

A few years back, a friend and I went to NYC to see her son perform with his university glee club. When we waited to take the bus somewhere, a NY mom explained that we needed exact change in coins. We had enough for me, but not enough for my friend. The young woman gave my friend enough change and we enjoyed chatting with her on the bus.
I've been back three times since (and once before) and have never had a bad experience.
Whenever I've needed a steer in the right direction, someone has been happy to help.

Agreed! As a native New Yorker, I'm rushing around because I'm busy - not because I'm rude. I'm happy to take a few seconds - or more! to help you out if you're polite.
I also agree with nytraveler - the way NYers came together post-9/11 and after Hurricane Sandy was a sight to see. I have family on Staten Island (who were fine, thankfully) and so many New Yorkers came out to rebuild. Amazing.
