New York Trip!
Hi! My boyfriend and I are going to be visiting New York for a long weekend (Thursday - Monday afternoon) and I am trying to plan (without being too rigid) our days. I have seen some great plans for daily activities including the Empire State Building, ice skating , grand central station. Another day of waking having breakfast, taking subway to Brooklyn to have some pizza and walk back on the Brooklyn bridge . We would like to see a show. Go to Times Square, little Italy, China town, Soho, and possibly the met. We also plan to take the staton island ferry to just view the Statue of Liberty from there. We arrive at 3:30 Thursday and are staying at the La Quinta in Manhattan and I am trying to make us a game plan for what to do that day and how to map out our events . We have been recommended a steak house but would love some more local ideas of food places ( some hole in the walls - some cheap some not, that's okay). Please help me with my plan. I've never been.

We are in out late twenties and want to have fun but we live in New Orleans, so we are not too worried about the bar scene. Mainly just cool food, cool sites, and not being overly stressed about our schedule or when to go where. Any help would be great.

I would bag the ESB - lines are too long to wait and Top of the Rock has IMHO better views and no lines (you can get advance tickets for any time you want).
I would not bother with Little Italy - there is nothing left but a few restaurants. Chinatown has some excellent places if you want real Chinese food.

For pizza in Brooklyn go to Lucali. Grimaldi's is not worth the wait.

For a different way to eat Chinese food go to Jing Fung In Chinatown for lunch during the week for dim sum and one of the cheapest meals you will have. The weekend is a zoo.
And for food you do not have in NOLA go to 2md Ave Deli. The sandwiches are very expensive but they are large and you can share one and have a couple of the sides you have never tasted.

On my 14th trip to New York City, I did my first walk on the Brooklyn Bridge. You don't need to go all the way into Manhattan, just travel on it until you feel like you've walked enough, then turn back to the High Street subway stop. Even if you go all the way, the closest subway stop is still High Street.
Some things to know:
1) There are no obvious signs on how to get to the Bridge from the High Street subway. However, this video

2) Remember that half the walk-way is explicitly designated for bike riders. Some of them are commuting to their jobs, and have every right to expect pedestrians to NOT use their half of the Bridge. Use the same caution as you would walking onto a street.
3) A traditional form of desecration on the Brooklyn Bridge is to leave a lock to symbolize being "locked in love."

I can't recommend an illegal act of vandalism, but you at least need to know what's going on.

If you cross to Manhattan from Brooklyn on the bridge, the closest stop is the Brooklyn Bridge station in Manhattan, not High Street station in Brooklyn. The subway entrance at the end of the bridge walkway is a dead giveaway.

If you've seen When Harry Met Sally, the Second Avenue Deli is the site of "I'll have what she's having."

What I said was, indeed, misleading if not just plain wrong.
Therefore, permit me to revise my statement.
If you walk towards Manhattan on the Brooklyn Bridge, till you are no longer over the water, you are still 800 meters from Chamber Street and Center Street, which is where the Manhattan subway stop called "Brooklyn Bridge" is located.
If you walk halfway across the Bridge, you are also 800 meters from the High Street Subway Stop in Brooklyn. Thus, the break even point for being closer to the Manhattan stop than the Brooklyn stop is about three-quarters of the way across the Bridge. If you walk from Brooklyn till you can no longer walk on the Bridge at all, then you are practically at the Manhattan subway stop. Contrary to what I seemed to say earlier, to turn around at that point and return to Brooklyn would be silly.
If you walk till you are over FDR Drive -- ie, until you are no longer over water -- then you are closer to the Manhattan subway stop called Brooklyn Bridge, but not by much.

Harry Met Sally was filmed in Katz's Deli, not 2nd Ave. And I like 2nd Ave better. And the woman who said that line was Rob Reiner's mother Estelle.
There is a group of younger chefs who are making excellent and interesting variations on American-Italian and Italian cooking who are based in Little Italy.

IMD is correct - 'twas Katz's.

And the Promenade. Although there has been a couple of absences from what was a great view . . .
