Hi, We are considering driving from new york to niagara falls this summer. We would be very grateful for recommendations on most scenic and varied route [and any good detours] plus any decent places with good food to stay overnight en route. We are from UK, ardent foodies and have never been to this part of world before so all suggestions welcome. Thanks

I would definitely try and book a room at the Prince of Wales Hotel in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Canada. There are several wineries near the town. Niagara-on-the-Lake is a very charming town with shops, cafes, and ice cream parlors. It is right on Lake Ontario. It is an easy stroll from the POW Hotel down to the lake.
I wouldn't want to stay in Niagara Falls proper, either US or Canada side. No charm.

If you stay in Niagara Falls iteself stay in the Sherton Fallsview - which has picture windows overlooking the Falls, which are floodlit at night.
Agree that the towns on both sides of the falls are tacky, but the fall themselves - esp from the Canadian side are beautiful.
Don;t know how long you have - but I wouldefinitely not drive all that distance without visiting Toronto - which is oly about an hour further. And, really you can see everything at the falls in one day.
From NYC, I would avoid the NYS thruway and take route 86 towards Binghamton, NY and enter the finger lakes region. Spend the night in a B & B in any of the wonderful towns and villages that line the finger lakes. Ithaca, NY, Naples, famous for their grape pies etc. This area is dotted with many vineyards.
I would then continue onto Niagara Falls taking route 20 or any route towards Buffalo and visit East Aurora, NY. Spend the afternoon or overnight here before you head into the Niagara Falls area. I agree with the above comments about Niagara on the Lake.
You can search any of these places on the internet for the most current reviews.
As mentioned above, the Finger Lakes are a great midway stop... Also consider the Corning museum near Ithica, possibly Cooperstown, the Chautauqua Institute, the Glen Iris in Letchworth, and the Hudson Valley regions... lots of choices for a 10 hour drive...
