Has anyone been to this restaurant in New York City? All the reviews seem impressive, but I want some personal experiences. Thanks!

I think it's probably the most beautiful and romantic restaurant in NYC. Very popular for proposals. I've eaten there twice. The service is excellent, but the food is not terrific. It's very good, but the atmosphere is more what the place is about. I highly recommend it as a place for a drink in the winter to enjoy the cozy fireplaces.
Ate there on a visit last year. We had a beautiful table overlooking the garden. Food was good, atmosphere was great. It is very romatic, especially the bar area with the dual fireplaces. I have told many people to try it. As I remember, our cab driver needed directions with a cross street reference to find the place.
Check chowhound.com
I was thinking of going there but found the reviews to be mediocre at best. Was referred elsewhere.
It's definetly not in the top ten for food, but it's probably in the top ten for atmosphere. I've been there three or four times. Why not go there for a drink and eat at Il Mulino?
I agree with all the other posters. It is impossible for the cab drivers to find and the food is good, but not great (especially given the prices charged). But, it is a quiet, relaxing romantic place.
My husband took me there for my birthday this year and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We found both positive and negative reviews on this board, but we enjoyed the overall atmosphere, service and food. We were visiting the city from overseas, so we'd made early reservations and were quite impressed...especially when they had an elegant birthday dessert with my name spelled "correctly" on it (with no big hubub to go along with it).
We also hired a car to take us there during rush hour and had no problem with him finding the location. If you try it, Jodie, be sure to report back on what you think.
Thanks to all of you for your help!

My most difficult decision of this whole trip is deciding where to go to dinner that night! LOL
And yes, if I do go this restaurant, I will report, Statia
We were there last month, and it definitely is a beautiful restaurant. We also visited Aquavit, Aureole and Gotham Grill while we were there, and while I would say that the food is not totally on par with the other establishments, I did not think it ranked excessively below. They seemed to serve a different style of food, maybe a bit more old fashioned than what you find nowadays in the "hot" restaurants. I would label it "solid American fare"? We both ordered the same dishes so maybe I just don't have that much to go on: fois gras appetizer, the Beef Wellington and a chocolate based dessert.
Overall, however, I the price of the meal was entirely reasonable for what we got. I can't quite recall specifics but, everything was quite good. I would recommend it to someone who's looking for a romantic dining experience.
Definitely go to One If By Land. It's a beautiful restaurant and a New York City building landmark. I believe it belonged to Aaron Burr.
I used to meet my dates there for a cocktail near the fireplace while the piano tinkled in the background. Very romantic.
If you take a taxi, tell the driver to drive down Seventh Avenue until Barrow Street. It's down a little winding street.
Overrated - mediocre food, indifferent service - and if it's a Saturday night, crowded and rushed. We left feeling totally ripped off and disappointed. Go for the Gotham Bar & Grill or Le Bernardin.
