New York Pass Yes or No ???

Hi Travelsetters,
Looking for advise on the "New York Pass". Stumbled onto this while doing sightseeing research. We will be spending from the 21 Oct to 27 Oct coming with an overnight (24th) trip to the falls. Currently until the 31st May they have 20% off. 3 Day for $191.20 Is it worth jumping online and purchasing now? Or are they a regular sale item? Has anyone used the New York Pass and how did you find it? Is it worth purchasing? Any help on this would be great. We are a party of 5 in our 40s to 50s together from Australia. To start of with looking seeing the main NY attractions which NY is know for. Not looking at doing zoo, fun park etc

It is not worth it; you are better off doing this on your own. The most expensive one is the Hop On/Off buses that take forever and eat up alot of your day

It is practically impossible to get the value back -since they are VERY expensive ad many of the benefits are illusory.

First of all it tends to steer you to the sights on their list versus what you might actually want to see/do. Second you cannot get in with the Pass - at each places you have to wait on a line to exchange the pass for tickets - wasting a lot of time.

second they ignore the fact that the most popular museums are either pay what you wish ($1 versus the $20 or $25 regular rate) or have specific times when they are free (Met, MoMA, Nat'l Hist).

They also don;t mention that using this pass makes it impossible to get advance timed tickets for the major sights you really need them for - since those tickets must be bought directly from the sight - including the Statue of Liberty (only available from statuecruises.com) and the 911 Museum (ditto).

So they are actually making you waste more time on line and preventing you from seeing parts of major sights (you can;t get the crown or even the pedestal of the SoL unless you ignore the pass and get separate tickets onine).

IMHO better to pick what YOU really want to see and then get advanced tickets where needed or use the cost savings options/times open to everyone.

Thank you for your help. I'm going to give this purchase a miss. Do the main attractions in NY offer discount tickets at all? What is the best way of obtaining these?

What attractions do you want to visit?
Central Park, Highline, Staten Island ferry, Times Square, strolling neighborhoods are all free.

Your best bet is to get a metro (subway) card for getting
from place to place which can also be used on our buses.

We are looking at the SoL, 9/11, Empire State Building, Brookeland Bridge, see a show, Wall Street stock exchange, would love to surprise my husband with seeing a sporting event Henjust loves the football, basketball and baseball, have a drink overlooking the city from a roof top bar. Just to mention a few. Are there any hidden treasures which are a must see? I have just purchased a NY Travel Guild to use as a reference point as well as here. Looking sat going to the Seinfeild Restaurant also. Hit the outlet shops, visit all the places Rhea58 mentioned. All suggestions and help welcomed

Most places do not offer discounts - but do check the web sites of places you want to see. As I mentioned the Met and Natural History are pay what you wish (a huge discount) and MoMA has some free times. Also, you can get to the Cloisters for free in a joint ticket with the Met (which can be discount).

But for most major sights there are no discounts - since there are hugely long lines at full price. Although many places have discounts for students of kids below a certain age.

As for broadway shows there are often discounts for older shows - go to broadwaybox.com to see which shows are discounting. Take the discount code and go to the official online ticket seller and buy as soon as you have your dates - to get seats together (often not possible at TKTS booth) and the best choice of sets. If you want to see a hit show then buy tickets NOW from the official online seller or you risk having to pay a large premium if you wait until you get here.

Thanks for all your help. I will book something this week once I checkout what's on and which one everyone wants to see. This will definitely be a highlight of our trip. Thanks again
