New York, New York...

If we have time for only one other thing besides hitting the art museums in December, what should it be?

That's a little difficult to respond to without knowing, at the very least, what your interests are.

Who are you - how many, ages, interests?

How may days in NYC? And what part of December (during the holidays the city is mobbed with 1.1 million school kids whose parents are looking for things to do with them.

Which of the dozens of museums are you planning on hitting.

Two of us: art, history. I apologize for not saying that off the top, as I know better but was just in a hurry. We have the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Frick, the Guggenheim, and the Modern Art Museum on our list for 3-1/2 days. (No Cloisters; medieval art not high on our list.) I suspect that will just about do it, but is there a single sight we should try to fit in? We'll be there the 6th, 7th, 8th, and part of the 9th.

Residential architecture in the West Village and East 70's and 80's. See if you can get a copy of the AIA guide to NYC from your library.

Ethnic food beyond Italian and Chinese.

Art book stores and The Strand.

We liked: New York Public Library free tour, walking the Highline, Rubin Museum of Himalayan Art.
On our list: audio tour of Grand Central Terminal, walking the Brooklyn Bridge back to Manhattan.
Iconic: Times Square at night, Statue of Liberty, Top of the Rock at sunset.

Well I wouldn't miss the New York Historical Society which often has brilliant exhibits and is a manageable size. You might also want to look at the Museum of the city of New York.

I don't esp care for the Guggenheim - the building is OK, but don't care for exhibit.

Separately, if you haven;t been here before at the holidays I would definitely walk Fifth Ave and visit Rock Center and st Pat's to see the incredible holiday decorations. This won;t interfere with art museum since you can do it later in the evening.

I would reco Ellis Island for history - but think it is still being repaired after Sandy damage.

With extra evening time you could also look at some of the downtown/DUMBO galleries to see current art.

Would also do a RT on the /staten Island ferry at night - to see the incredible city skyline on the way back. Again - after museum hours.

Rock Center and St. Pat's it is--the former was actually on my mental list. The suggestions for evening visits are bery helpful.

I've ordered (free, as I'm a member) the AAA book on New York.

This is our first trip to NYC, by the way.

In that case definitely visit Top of the Rock to see the city from above. I believe it stays open until midnight - and while the city lit up at night is magical it's also interesting to do around sunset - so you can see it both during the day and after dark. (IMHO much better than Empire State - since you can reserve tickets in advance to avoid lines and it gives better views including Central Park and athe view OF the ESB.)

I would suggest just walking into the Guggenheim and taking a look at it from inside the lobby. The last time I was there I was able to do that for free and save time and $.

If anyone has been there recently, please advise if this is no longer possible.
