New York, New York

Hi all,

I plan to do a search for info, but thought I would post a quick couple of questions:

I may have an opp to spend a day in NYC later this week.

any great things I should try to cram in to one day - hopefully CHEAP as I took a severance package at work and can't spend the farm anymore...

what exhibits are going on right now that I should not miss, any fave (cheap) restos.. I would be there from mid morning until late afternoon only, maybe 8 hours MAX... so it really would be mostly walking around time. any favored walks? How close could I get to the Ground Zero? (hate to ask, but I really want to see this horror that was been wrought - still hard to get my mind around it...)

I might have time to go up the Empire State building, how tough/long is that?

any other suggestions, super... I really appreciate it. feel free to email me too actually..

thanks!

Beth

Oh Beth, what a treat for you-London and now New York
If you are interested in museums, the Metropolitan on 5th Avenue is having a Signac exhibition and the Christmas tree is up in the Medieveal section. The Japanese rooms are wonderful and peaceful. You can buy Christmas cards in the museum gift shops..I do that every year. For the amount of time you will be here, you will sort of need to decide which part of town you want to concentrate on, the Ground Zero area is way down at the tip, away from 5th Avenue, Rockefeller Center,St Patricks, then you have the village/Soho area, with Little Italy,Tribeca,Chinatown, where you can eat and shop, paying not too much-or a lot , and be nearer to Ground Zero, but I don't think you can get that close, or would want to..a good not expensive at all place to eat lunch in Soho is a small place called Il Corallo on Prince Street, near Sullivan, Italian, everything is homemade and very good.So many places, so little time! Hope this has been some kind of help~M

Hi Beth, I was in NYC a week ago, and you can get pretty close to ground zero. An hour down there is long enough. The air is still bad there. From there its a short cab ride to Soho where there was an exhibit on Spring st. called Here is New York. Its a fasinating heartbreaking photo exhibit, by amatuers and pros. There are great stores and galleries, plus some great street shopping. Not your usual knockoff purses. From Soho, you are within walking distance to Greenwich Village or the opposite direction will get you to Chinatown. If you decide to go uptown the N or R subway will get you there quickly.

Guggenheim Museum has the Norman Rockwell, Pictures for the American People exhibit. If you like Rockwell, it can't be beat.

Thank you everyone!

I do hope to get up there this week, maybe Thursday. While I am still waiting for a job to come through, I am making much use of my time off. A lot of running around.

I'll also be in Philly one-two days, prolly Friday (I have friends there, it's quite easy to get the train to NYC, so...) any extra ideas for Philly?

Hi Beth, I was in Soho today.Want to hear how we spent it? We had breakfast at the Cub Room on Prince Street, sat by the bar, where the tables by the windows make you feel like you are sitting outside..it was in the 60's in NY today. Then we went to a small shop on Prince that sells unusual/funny/beautiful cards,so we got our Christmas cards there. Then we walked up to Broadway, where I did my weekly sojourn through Sephora, there must be something I need! browsed through mens Banana Republic, checked out the sidewalk vendors, great black and white photos of NY skyline, buildings, etc. very nice, something like $10-each.Then on to Canal Street where we walked along, looking at the bags they sell,"Gucci,Burberry,Prada" for $20.00 each, then on to Grand St where we had tea at a Brazilian place called Nuovocento..the waiters are great, young Brazilians, they usually sing under their breath while waiting tablesSomeone mentioned the exhibit on Spring St, it is still quite busy, there are lines there all the time, the photos are heartbreaking, wonderful. If you want a break in that area, there is the Mercer Hotel and Restaurant, you can have a bite and celebrity watch..or go to Fanellis across the street on Spring and have a beer/tea/sandwich and enjoy a touch of an old NY Irish Bar scene .Then we went home
