Last September we visited the Gorham and look at two rooms. The Gorham once was a $100/night small hotel with bulter pantries. They have done a nice job in refurbishing the entire hotel and it is now in the botique catagory. You can get a room with modest kitchen capabilities. Their full rack rates seem high to me but they do have special rates from time to time that make the hotel a good value. Another hotel in a smiliar catagory is the Shorham just down the street closer to 5th ave.
While in NYC in April we looked into 12 different hotels...the Warwick looked really nice, beautiful restaurant and bar area, both on the smallish side. The clientele meandering in the lobby appeared to be very attractive group. We stayed at the Doubletree Guest Suites because there were three of us and we wanted three beds, but otherwise, we would consider the Warwick.
I've stayed at the Salisbury often (it is right across the street from my company's NY office). Some of the rooms are better than others, and you used to be able to get a suite fairly cheaply. HOWEVER, lately they aren't quite the deal they used to be, so I go for nicer places.
