New york for the holidays!

So me and my husband have booked a trip to NYC for the holidays from the 23rd dec - 2nd of January We are staying in Manhattan at the intercontinental Between lexington and park ave. We are super excited and we were wondering can any of you out there recommend things to do there for the holidays... any tips we should know of? we are both 27 and Irish although we live and are coming from San Francisco. My wifes Birthday is New years day also so im hoping to plan something Romantic and memorable for it.

Cheers

Yours is the busiest tourist week of the year. In fact the streets around Rockefeller Center and Times Square become inpassable. And avoid Times Square all together on Dec 31 when people start waiting for the ball to drop at midnight.

I would suggest eating in residential areas rather than in mid-town.

Agree for New Year's Eve have dinner uptown and then see the fireworks in Central Park. Doing Times Square is positively hellish and to be seen only on TV.

Most things re closed on New Year's Day, including many restaurants. So if you want a special romantic meal I would try getting reservations now. If you give us a budget and tell us what cuisines you like/dislike people can make specific recos.

New Year's Day is generally very quiet in the city. You might consider a ride on the Staten Island ferry, ascending the Top of the Rock, or, it the weather is decent, a walk through Central park or one of the more picturesque neighborhoods.

Here's a holiday guide from NY Magazine from last year. Most of these things are annual. http://nymag.com/guides/holidays/

The Radio City Xmas Spectacular, walking the dept. store windows, ice skating in Central Park are some of the popular things people do. http://nymag.com/guides/holidays/

Try opentable.com and menupages.com to see what restaurants are open on New Year's Day.
