New York for Foodies
Long weekend in NYC to celebrate 20th. Need to fill in some meals.
Need a lunch idea for Thursday. Keep us in Manhattan. We'll probably sort of wander the city and hit some architectural landmarks. So something near Grand Central, Flat Iron, or other great architecture. Not too heavy because we have dinner reservations at Daniel.
Friday will likely be spent at the Met and Central Park. Need a lunch spot. Dinner is early at Goggan as we have tix to Something Rotten. Is Goggan a good choice? Nothing in the theater district looked very appealing.
Need a lunch spot on Saturday. Balthazar? I've been there but husband hasn't. We have tix to matinee of She Loves Me. And need a dinner spot for Saturday night.
Is there anything that we shouldn't miss? Price isn't necessarily a limiting factor. We're pretty adventurous.

You might check out Grand Central itself. I think there's also a Shake Shack there.

AGERN is a new restaurant in Grand Central, opened by the co-founder of NOMA. Tasting menus only. I have not been there, however, and it is still kind of under-the-radar.
In Flatiron, UPLAND is dependable, with varied menu. Very popular at the moment. Good for both lunch and dinner. Excellent salads and lovely roasted mushrooms, to name two of my favorites. Everyone I've taken has liked it.
Near Flatiron, NOMAD, is one of my favorites in the city. Would be a better choice than BALTHAZAR (and for me, a much better choice than DANIEL). Their chicken for two is justly famous but I also love their suckling pig, and other dishes.
You should not miss the HighLine. I had lunch last week in the Whitney, at UNTITLED AT THE WHITNEY which would make a good lunch stop if you are in that area.
If you are not set on DANIEL, you might want to rethink, especially since you are adventurous diners. I'd choose JEAN GEORGES or THE DINING ROOM AT THE MODERN, or NOMAD, instead, but that's just personal preference. I find the food more exciting at all three. To be fair, I've not been to DANIEL in about 4 years.

Balthazar is not for self-proclaimed foodies, it is now for tourists looking for celebrities who have not been there in 15 years. Their bakery is excellent however.
Near, not in, Grand Central, is an upscale food court where a number of hipster places have kiosks including Roberta's and Red Hook Lobster called Urbanspace Vanderbilt.

The food market IN Grand Central has Murray's Cheese who is probably the best cheesemonger in the City and bakery goods from Eli's and chocolates from Li-Lac plus other places.

Questioning one choice and one comment:
Why would you think of going to Balthazar which is way downtown for lunch on the day that you're going to the theater in midtown?
Your comment that "nothing in the theater district looks very appealing" reflects to me you've not done a good job of researching the options. Tell us what types of food options you are looking for and we can certainly pass along a number of suggestions in the theater district!
