New York City in April

Would like to go for a few days second week in April. With the huge number of hotel options available, I am a bit overwhelmed. It will be my wife's first trip to New York so we will be taking in all the attractions and would like to be fairly centrally located. I realize price is going to be at a premium but would like to be able to stay somewhere clean and relatively nice without using up funds on lodging. My only other trip to NYC was over ten years ago and I stayed at the Roosevelt. Any suggestions would be appreciated, trying to get the jump on this.
Thanks

If you go to the box above called View by State and click on New York, you will see that these are common concerns and ones that has been addressed many times. You will see that if you come back with specific questions people can be more helpful.

thanks,
I'm seeing on tripadvisor some fairly highly rated options for under $400 per night (before taxes, etc) such as the liberty hotel for 388, the elsyee for 308, and the lex NYC for the mid 250's. Just curious as if this is typical price range for these properties. These all appear to be in the manhattan area. This is about the limit of what I would want to pay and still be able to eat, go to shows, etc...
Thanks for the help, the last time I was there was in December 2003, so it's been a while.

I always try and rent an apartment thru VRBO.. I have done this 4 or 5 times in the last 6 years... I prefer the Chelsea area but have stayed on the upper West side too... This last month, I stayed in Greenwich Village which is now my favorite.

I'm sorry but short term apartment rentals (fewer than 30 days) in NYC are illegal unless you are staying in a spare room while the legal tenant is in residence. So I strongly suggest you stick with hotels.

If you were here in December before you probably paid the highest rates of the year - and rates in April should be better. I would check the various discount sites to see which hotels are offering special deals, then determine if you have a specific neighborhood you want (I think what really matters is proximity to the subway) and if you are looking for more traditional or modern.

and yes, you want to be in Manhattan - below 96th St. Only you can decide if you want to be in the hyper activity of times Square, in a business area or in a more residential one.

Of the ones you mention the Elysees is charming but tends to have very small rooms. and that time of year I would think you can find something quite pleasant for no more than $300 per night.

Try http://www.wjhotel.com Jefferson Washington Hotel, 318 West 51st. Little Boutique hotel. Stayed there last month for 1st time...very nice service, small and old but updated. AND VERY CLEAN. Front desk went out of their way to help us with transportation, directions, suggestions. The price was very reasonable. I've stayed in NY many times and was pleasantly surprised. nice clientele. Enjoy!

fpk: I have to ask: What are "nice clientele?" I don't think I've ever really noticed much about fellow guests in a NYC hotel, so I'm asking.
