We are trying to go to NY on December 3, for four nights, and I am amazed of
the hotels prices for those dates. Please can any of you help me with a reasonable
hotel with a reasonable rate. Our budget is $200, to $250.00 a night.
I am thinking of Priceline.
Thanks for the help

Also try booking.com
Thank you Michelle, I am going to try.
Try Priceline. A few weeks back I reserved a room for early December at a 3+ star hotel in midtown east for $220.
The downtown Marriott has rooms for $299 a night but the Escape package at $324 includes parking (normally $55!) and $25 gas card so if you're driving to the city it's close to your budget.
Try quikbook.com too. They sometimes have decent specials.
Thank you for all the suggestions, I will try, quickbook...
(Iforgot about it.) and also if it doesn't work, I will go
to Priceline, that my daughter booked a three and a half hotel
in Midtown (Roosevelt) last week. We are catching a flight
from Miami, and No car.
You've picked perhaps the worst dates for hotel prices. The Best Western Seaport is a cute smaller hotel downtown that's $234/night plus tax on quikbook.com If that doesn't appeal to you, try coming a week later or better still 2 weeks later. The first weekend in Dec. is always the most expensive and the most crowded. I'm not sure Priceline will be much better esp. this far in advance.
This is the busiest and most expensive time of year in NYC and bargains are very few. You can try Pricline - they may or may not have inventory (check betterbiddg.com or biddingfortravel.com to see what hotels people are getting for what prices on your dates). Also be aware that Priceline is somewhat generous with their * ratings - there is no way I would go below a 3*.
You can also look at quikbook and travelzoo to see if they have any deals. Also look at hotel websites now to see if they have any internet specials if you are willing to prepay.
But - be aware that your budget is very basic for that time of year for 2 people. If there are more than 2 of you - and you need a larger double/double room - versus a regular room with one bed - that price will be difficult.
Mclaurie and nytraveler, thanks so much for your input.
You are right, its very expensive the first week, of December,
but I am going to try Priceline 3 and a half stars. I am going to wait
until next week to bid.
We have never been this time of the year in N.Y., and would
love to see the Christmas decorations.
Also take a look at www.hotwire.com. At www.betterbidding.com you can decipher which hotel it is usually with the amenities.
It's obviously a very busy and therefore expensive time of year. The cheapest hotels on Hotwire are $228 for a 3* (Empire State Building area) and $265 for a 3-1/2* (midtown east). I think these are all "plus tax". Usually priceline is a little less expensive than Hotwire because it's more of a "shot in the dark" (using Hotwire you can usually figure out the hotel in advance, as lincasanova said, whereas with Hotwire, all you'll know is the area, and may a list of the possible hotels, so if there's a hotel that priceline uses that you wouldn't be happy with, don't bid).
You need to look carefully to see if the prices quoted include tax of not - since tax is about 18% - $48 per night on a $265 room..
Thank you for the advises, and your input.
I will check Hotwire, and priceline.
All the other sites like Hotels.com,travelocity,expedia., etc... are very expensive.
Those are really tough dates.
Take a look at www.easyclicktravel.com I've gotten lucky there on occasion.
Also, have a look at the Calendar of Wins on www.betterbidding.com to see what's been coming up on Priceline.
If you do decide to bid on Priceline - take your time. Do not keep upping your bid, then add fewer stars. Start over if you want to lower the star rating, with a lower bid. If not successful, wait and start over the next day, as additional inventory may become available.
You may want to request bidding assistance on www.betterbidding.com and www.biddingfortravel.com - the administrators are experts in getting the best rates.
