New York City hotel suggestion for our first visit

My husband and I are planning our first visit to New York City over the Memorial Day weekend for four days . Any suggestions of hotels ? Would like to keep the budget at $300.

That's nightly, right? Not $300 total for the four nights.

I like Murray Hill area; easy to get to and lots of things [sites, restaurants] that are easy to get to.

The Roger
70 Park Ave
Eventi
[last 2 are Kimptons, which we love]

Cambria Suites is a bit more reasonable - we stayed there in Sept, new and nice. [might be Chelsea] {123 W. 28th Street,}

The Paul.

I'm partial to the Affinia hotels - all are very good with friendly staff.

What do YOU like in a hotel? The Residence Inn Central Park has AWESOME views ( it's at the top of the tallest hotel building in NYC) but while the rooms are well designed, they're not large and it's not a glamorous hotel. Rooms have kitchenettes and breakfast is included. It's a great location north of Times Square so not as crowded as the center of TS and south of Central Park. The Michelangelo is in the same area...no views but very large rooms and huge bathrooms. It's got a boutique hotel feel but is not hip and trendy. Those would be my picks for a first visit.

do you like to be in busy area, or quiet neighborhood? Large chain or boutique? We like neighborhood feels so we try to stay in upper West side area.Have stayed at the NYLO a couple of time and loved it. Evening wine up on the terrace if it is a nice day other wise lobby. We love the location 2 blocks to subway, great market across the street for snacks and one of our favorite restaurants a few blocks away Isabella's The Casablanca is more toward Times Square but off on a side street. Small boutique hotel but not sure you can get a room for that price especially around a holiday. They offer a lovely breakfast which is a nice touch and afternoon tea and evening wine.
