The first week in December is usually when they light up the Rockefeller Center tree so try to plan anytime after that, also try to see if you can fit in The Radio City Christmas Spectacular, Macy's on 34th street, Saks & Bergdof Goodman usually have amazing window displays. Christmas in NY is truly magical

The day after Christmas through the day before New Year's Eve (so, December 26-30) is the best bet for saving money.

What does "budget minded" mean to you? "Manhattan" and "budget minded" may be oxymoronic.

Usually the week between Christmas and New Year's the hotel rates are lowest - although they will still be higher than other times of year.

The cheapest way to see Christmas decorations is to come on Jan 1 or 2 and stay a few days.

For "budget-minded" you need to give us a specific amount in $ - since we don;t know what that means to you. (Kayak shows a few budget hotels with rate of about $200 - plus tax - on these dates - don;t guarantee the quality.)

Times Square and Rock Center are right near each other - different feelings but only a few blocks apart. The former has way more hotels and probably less expensive ones.

We got a very reasonable rate at the Best Western Plus Hospitality House two years ago in December. Even my young children had no difficulty walking to Rockefeller Center and Times Square (in a snowstorm!). It is old - not an updated, fancy place, but clean and spacious. We had two bedrooms, a bath, a living space with a foldout sofa, a dining area and a kitchen. And free breakfast, too. I don't know if you need that much space, but maybe they have smaller rooms.

The cheapest time to come will be the week after Christmas, leaving before New Year's Eve. But what do you think is "budget-minded". An average price room in NYC costs well over $200, and many of those will not accommodate a third person easily. Times Square is a busy area with a lot of big hotels, but it's not cheap or budget-minded. Even the Hampton Inn will cost $400 per night the weeks leading up to Christmas. If you insist, the area around Herald Square is generally much cheaper but rooms are also smaller.

You can stay a subway stop or two from Manhattan in Long Island City, Queens, for less than $200 and have a huge room with possible free continental breakfast. That's what I'd recommend for a budget-minded trip. You'll be 15 minutes from Times Square by subway. The Country Inn & Suites is among the closest hotels to the subway, but there are now much nicer (albeit more expensive) hotels in the area.

You need to discuss what in the world you are talking about. That means a nightly budget in dollars. "Budget minded people" and "cheapest" are meaningless terms, especially in NYC where the price of low-end inexpensive hotels will rival top business-class chains outside the northeast (or Chicago or San Francisco). The notion that a "budget" hotel near Times Square or the Rock will be anyplace rented out nightly instead of hourly is essentially wistful thinking.

I'm sure there are no rent by the hour hotels near Rock Center and probably not many left near Times Square. More in the Bronx or certain areas of Brooklyn or Queens - but perhaps a few still downtown.

But you do need to give a $ amount esp since you are asking for a triple room rather than a standard double one.
