There's a wonderful bistro called Pascalou at 1308 Madison Ave (92 & 93). It's listed as french, but I would call the food eclectic. It is very, very small, but charming and has a strong neighborhood following. A reservation is a good idea.
212-534-7522. (I like to sit upstairs.)
Where exactly is the Marriott?
There are sooo many restaurants in that area. Just walk out and you'll easily find something you like.
Pio Pio is a popular chicken place (Peruvian) near the hotel..1st Avenue between 90th and 91st Street.
I second pio pio. Exactly what I was thinking. Love the green sauce that comes with the chickens. Yummy!
hi, located at 410 e92nd (courtyard marriot).someone asked where the hotel was.
thanks for the responses by the way
One of New York's best "new" restaurants is Sfoglia, on the corner of Lex & 92nd.
It's more expensive than Pio Pio certainly, but Sfoglia is worth every penny.

I second gekko's recommendation of Sfoglia. But, it is not a moderately priced restaurant and because of it's small size, it is very difficult to get a reservation.
Gekko - if you like Sfoglia, have you tried Spigolo (on 2nd and 81st)? I like it even better than Sfoglia.
Oh yes, I've been a regular at Spigolo since Scott & Heather opened it.
I think of Spigolo as a spot for excellent pasta, and Sfoglia as the place for Ron's chicken al mattone.
Indeed, reservations are tough at Sfloglia. Even the bar seats are reserved!
any other good recommendations? I do love PEruvian food but not chicken, so forget about Pio Pio
Thanks
You'll find zillions of great neighborhood restaurants on 2nd Ave south of 92nd Street. Just walk and check out the menus.
A few examples ... Cafe d'Alsace ... Josie's ... Bid Daddy's Diner ... CiaoBella ... Cilantro ... Cinco de Mayo ... Heidelberg (authentic German) ... Jasmine (Thai) ... Noodles 28 ... etc.
thanks for that list. I think I am leaning towards the German restaurant. and maybe breakfast at Big Daddy's Diner.
Can you recommend a good Italian restaurant in the area of E 92nd?
I will be visiting NYC once a week so I figure I might as well eat well!
Also, what else is good for breakfast?
Spigolo is excellent, corner of 2nd & 81st across the street from the first Starbucks to open in New York.
Lots of good suggetions here.
My SIL who lives on the UES, likes this little place called Rughetta, on 85th between 1st and 2nd. There is also Vespa, which isn't bad on 2nd Avenue between 84th and 85th.
When I lived up there (in a previous century) I LOVED the Heidelberg and the late, lamented Mocca and the Ideal Restaurant. For good pastries, coffee and sandwiches, if Yura Cafe on 91st and and 3rd is still there, check it out.
For breakfast/brunch, Sarabeth's on E 92nd & Madison is a great choice. The omelettes and baked goods are very tasty!
The Starbucks with two floors was the first to open in New York? Get outta here. I love that store. The second floor especially.
I like Spigolo very much! Lovely people, too.
Gekko: Is Sfoglia a one-month-in-advance place?
Is there any hope of getting a table as a walk in during the week, let's say about 6pm??
Delizia seems to get good reviews (for Italian). http://menupages.com/restaurantdetails.asp?areaid=0&restaurantid=103&neighborhoodid=7&cuisineid=35
Firenze in the 80's is good. Don't know why you've selected that hotel, but unless you need to be in that location, there are far more convenient hotel options. That one is a long walk to the nearest subway.
If you are willing to walk about 15 minutes, you can try this upscale French/Mexican place which is very well regarded:

hi, thanks for the posts, well I ate at the Heidelberg Wed night. Good food! very reasonable for nyc-- thanks for the tip on the restaurant
someone mentioned a restuarant near the Heidelberg-- Rugheta? that looks reasonably priced..Dont mind paying for a good meal but dont want to go overboard. The hotel is a good location for me- right near fdr to leave the city- and my business dealings are nearby-- im only interested in going half a mile walking distance.. Here is another question---if you are on East 66th street and want to get on the FDR NORTH- what is the best way to go? go on first avenue and drive till 92 and take a right??? any better way? traffic on first ave today was hell, that was 3ish
East side traffic was especially bad today because the President was at the UN this afternoon. That has a domino effect all up and down the east side.
To get on the FDR north from 66th I would just drive 4 blocks south to 62nd St. Unless it was after 4:00PM or so, then It might be faster to approach the FDR from 92nd.
Yes, Rughetta is reasonable, as is Pinocchio on 90 and First Ave.
Yes, the 2 story Starbucks at 2nd & 81st was the first to open in NYC.
I'd guess one can get a decent reservation at Sfoglia less than a month in advance, except perhaps at prime times on weekends? I honestly don't know. I kinda get special treatment there now.
The entrance to the FDR is on 96th, not 92nd and note that you cannot make a right on 1st Ave between 4 - 7 pm (I think Mon - Fri, but not positive). During those hours, you would take York Ave north and it goes along and under the FDR and leads right onto it - very simple.
ive been on e 66th at the corner of first ave and take a right all the way to 92nd , where the marriot is and the apc, animal thing, there I take a right onto the fdr
I just came back from dropping ds at LaGuardia. The 4 - 7 pm right turn restriction from 1st Ave onto 96th St is only M - F. There is no north entrance on 92nd St. I'm not sure what you're referring to.
On 92nd (or whatever, I always forget), after the animal adoption place, go the end of the block, make a left. That heads up to the FDR north entrance. Bypass that 96th street madness.
exactly what I do 2x a week.
Now I understand. When you make the left, you're really at the beginning (or end) of York Ave. We were talking about the same thing.
hey, must say that Rugheta was absolutely HORRIBLE.
Worst help , food lousy.
Poor service- cant believe its been open for 8 years.
Soda- only coke and diet coke-- NO Ginger ale?? No tonic water???
Anyone who thinks this is a good restaurant certainly has their tastebuds up their "feel in blank"
...."fill in blank"
wow. Sorry. really sorry. My SIL LIKES it. gee. She's usually pretty dead on. wow. I'm really sorry. I see it gets a pretty good rating in Zagat, too. Not that that can't be misleading but . . wow.
But you liked Heidelberg, right? If you're willing to spend a bit more, you might like Cafe d'Alsace. I hope you do!
when it comes to food, i dont mind paying for a good meal, but that restaurant was in my opinion lousy.
let me give you an example- the table next to ours had some women there maybe 5-- the man who greets and takes you to the table- continually filled their water etc..
My water was empty and he never came to refill it.. IN FACT, no one even came to our table to ask us how our food was! Incredible..
It seems like it is run by Mexicans- I think everyone working their was from Jalisco, MX
Um . . excuse me, but what does being run by Mexicans have to do with anything?
Parlor Steakhouse or Cafe D'Alsace.
check out www.menupages.com it lists the menu for just about every restaurant in nyc so you can check out all the restaurants listed in these posts
Must have been a bad nite at Rhugetta... we live a block away and its one of our favorite places. Food is always good...I think the owner is Italian.
Also, if you're into beer Cafe d'Alsace at 88th and 2nd is known for that... plus pretty good food. If you just want a diner for breakfast... try the Mansion on the corner of 86th and York. Or, if wine and simple food would fill the bill... check out Sharz on 86th just west of York.
Just around the corner from you is the York Grill*. (On York and 88th). If you're alone I think you could eat at the bar... but I'm not sure. Good solid food (tho we consider Rhugetta at little more special -
* It's listed in Zagats.

You will find Latinos working in all manner of restuarants in NYC, including sushi chefs and kosher delis. They are valued, for among other things, in following the instructions of the chef to reporduce high quality meals.
If this offends you please have some velveeta on white bread in your room, otherwise there will be a Latino in some capacity in a NYC restaurant.
