Hi, we want to start planning a trip to New York, but are wondering when to visit. This will be our first visit to this city, although we have visited the USA many times - great place for holidays!
Two questions at this stage -
if we tack a week on to Easter (either before or after) is this peak season in New York? I'm wondering if hotel prices will be even higher than I have been reading. Is it school holidays during that time?
Also, the weather. It sounds like it will be cold, coat weather really. Is that right?
Thanks for your help.
Kay

Trip Ideas
NYC public schools are on vacation 4/9-17. Private schools usually have their spring break in March.
As far as weather, it's really anyhting goes. I remember snow in April and I remember sun bathing in the back yard. I'd say typically 50s-60s, maybe with some rain here and there.
I don't know abotu hotel prices, just plug in some different dates in Kayak and check it out.
Sometimes hotel prices are very high because it's a busy tourist time (like New Year's Eve) sometimes the prices are high because of business travel (most of the fall months, for example)
Easter time will be about "average"
School holidays in the US, which include Easter vacation and other kinds of "spring break", can be anytime from February until April.
Easter week is not nearly as busy in NY with US tourists as this time of the year is(Thanksgiving till Christmas)
Weather: Easter in 2009 is on April 12th. NYC doesn't seem to get a real Spring season but I wouldn't call that time of the year very cold.Daytime temperatures should be in the 60s (F) but could be 10-15 degrees more or less. Rain is common
Thanks, it sounds like taking the week before Easter would be better - a bit quieter. Though I realise it IS New York.
Have just been googling to figure out what 60 is in celsius - about 15. Hmmm. While certainly not freezing cold, not t-shirt weather either. Will have to think whether to visit in April or later in the year.
Is there likely to be less rain in September, than in April? It would obviously be warmer then.

Just anecdotal, but we were there that same week (April 11th) a few years ago, and within the same week it was glorious shirt-sleeve weather, and bundle-up with gloves and scarves weather. There's no telling.
I was there on Good Friday this year (late March) and was in shorts and a sweatshirt. March / April can be hit or miss.
No - high season is Oct through Dec and low season is Jan through early March. You will be in sort of mid season - there should be some hotel deals available - depending on how the dollar is doing versus the euro/pound.
NYC schools are closed the week after Easter - which means 1.1 million kids - plus some from the suburbs - on the streets - often visiting things in the city with their parents - so you can expect things to be more crowded than the rest of the spring.
Given the choice I would do the week before Easter rather than the week after.
Weather is take your pick. Check about 5 days out and you will have an idea. It could be 70 or you could have sleet. A blizzard or temps higher than 80 are unlikely.
Be sure you have comfy walking shoes and a sturdy folding umbrella.
Thanks so much for all this info - it really helps.
We are considering going somewhere else in April and visiting New York in September.
Any comments on September - is this mid season? Weather sounds like it could be better than April.
Thanks
Kay
Kay--Did you decide not to go to Sante Fe and Arizona in February? I just answered your post about that and wondered what you decided.
Thanks, Margo
Easter isn't nearly such a big holiday in the US as it is in Europe and other parts of the world. But prices do start rising in March. Given the economy, you may be able to find some good deals in April, and the weather (as other posters have said) can be hit or miss ... either chilly or warm depending on the year. April is a much much rainier month than September in the Northeast. For my money, September is the very best month in New York ... neither too hot nor too cold.
Hi Margo, I just read your reply to my other thread, thanks.
The problem is I've just started a new job so getting leave early in the new year could be difficult. We still want to visit southern Arizona, Santa Fe etc but now are now sure when it will be. I've saved the thread with all it's good suggestions.
We've been trying to figure out where to go next year and New York and Croatia are high on our list. So we were thinking New York in April and Croatia in September but now I'm thinking of swapping them around, mainly due to the weather.
The Caribbean is one place we always said we wanted to visit but every time I look into it, something puts me off, like reports of violence, and to be honest, we are not really beach people so I'm thinking should we spend all this money to visit what is a beach destination. So the jury is still out on the Caribbean. If I was really wealthy and didn't have to eke out my annual leave, I'd go like a shot but I'm not.
Sorry to get off-subject.
Kay
Weather in September is usually still summer - can easily be in the 90's, although around 80 is more likely. But - you're starting to run into higher season and hotel prices may be on the rise.
On the positive side - kids are back in school by the early part of the month.
